Hilot Apprentice

Miracles happen when you believe. Hilot has been known as a folkloric medicine that is based on spirituality and mysticism but when you spend time discovering its ways you will see the arts and science behind it. Our ancestors who practice this as our First Medicine are unschooled individuals who has no Certificates, Diploma or Professional License to practice it but it works wonders on their patients.

Not all Manghihilot were born as Manghihilot. Some of them became a Patient first that been healed by a manghihilot from chronic illness and as part of thanksgiving to God they swear an oath to continue the practice of Hilot to preserve it. From observation and oral instruction they emulate how their manghihilot heal them and apply it to their family and later to their neighborhood. Some Manghihilot learn through the recollection of their memories on how their parents and grandparents personally apply our indigenous medicine to them when they are sick. And through practice they enhance their abilities to heal.

verma apprenticeshipThere are no formal schools of Hilot way back then. They learn Hilot through apprenticeship, observation and oral instructions given to them by their elders. There is no certificate, diploma or professional license given to them as a proof that they know how to perform hilot.  The only proof that you are manghihilot is that you perform and obtain favorable results in your action that is Healing.

It takes a lot of courage and confidence in order to be a Manghihilot. That is why sometimes it is considered also as a Faith Healing Modality because you need a lot of faith and trust in your ability that you can work wonder in healing your patient. Being a Manghihilot is not a Certified Professional but they are Ordained Minister in bringing back wellness into life. Since the main belief in Hilot is that Life is a sacred gift from the Divine, and our body is the house of the spirit so the work of manghihilot does not only focus on the Physical matter but also works on the soul and spiritual well being.

The power behind the oil of manghihilot

IMG20181103104209Throughout the ages, the common Filipino people have a bottle of Healing Oil kept in their home altar. Within these bottle relies the health and life of their Family. Whenever a family member is in pain or have illness, the bottle of oil is used to be applied on the person to invoke healing to come and make the person whole again.  This bottle of oil also becomes a detector if there are some evil forces nearby their home. It is seen that the oil inside the bottle will become bubbly, or the outside surface of the bottle has moist as if the oil spilled out or even the oil inside the bottle is boiling. This is why we often see a bottle of healing oil being sold nearby churches. Because the oil need to be blessed in order for its properties to take effect.

In our Old Tradition, the Powerful healing oil should be made by a Babaylan who is also a Healer. It is done during the Full Moon of Friday during Holy Week. For about a month, the healer gather all the it’s ingredients in the mountain and on the time of the Full Moon he will cook it as he invoke the power of the God to be present as he make the Holy Oil. From the concocted oil, Life and Death will bow down to all who possess this sacred oil.

In this video as you can see, you can dip your hands into a boiling hot healing oil while making it and will not burn you. Since it is made of freshly picked and pounded organic herbs, you will feel its hot but it will not burn you because of the healing and cooling effect of the herbs.

NORWAY TRADITIONAL MEDICINE

Last night i view our WordPress Traffic report and see who view us and i found that there are 5 views coming from Norway. So i started to check on this European Country and check it’s Traditional Medicine.

NORWAY VIEWS HABI

norway-flag-stdNorway , officially as the Kingdom of Norway, is a Nordic Country in Northern Europe whose territory comprises the western and northern most portion of the Scandanavian peninsula; the remote island of  Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard are also part of the Kingdom of Norway.   The Name Norge which means “The Northern Way” originally pertained to a region of the country before political consolidation under Harald the Fair-Haired around 900 C.E. In later use, the country’s name indicates its location on the northern periphery of Europe. Oslo is the Capital City of Norway and their form of Government is Unitary Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy ruled by a King and their State Religion is Christianity where the King is the head of the State Church employing Bishops and Priest in the administrative structure.

The Traditional Medicine of Norway is shaped by both Christianity and Traditional Sami (an Indigenous group in Norway) Nature Worship. The healing rituals may include prayer, the use  of tools such as moss, water, stones, wools and soil. In Norway, Traditional Healing is categorized as Traditional Medicine and itsa modalities offered are cupping, blood-stemming, laying on of hands, healing prayers and rituals. The Traditional Healers are mostly non-professional and non-commercial therapist.

According to World Health Organization, almost everyone in Norway is allowed to treat patients, regardless of training or profession. However, only allopathic physicians, and to some extent dentists and persons assisting physicians and under the guidance of a physician, are allowed to use the title “Doctor of Medicine”, use a title indicating a specialty in a specific illness, or advertise- although anyone can place an announcement in the press that contains only a name, address, consultation hours, and general information on services provided.

It is quite interesting to know that there is a Traditional Medicine practice in Norway that is known as Guvllar. Guvllar means traditional healer, the other term used for traditional healer are “buorideaddji” (healer) “diehti” (one who knows), and “oaidnu” (clairvoyant). All of these terms originates from “noaidevuohta” who is a pre Christian Priest/ Healer of Norway like our very own Babaylan in the Philippines.

A noaidi has the ability to listen and see beyond the appearance of all things, and to understand their true nature; a disseminator of knowledge, and also an artist, seer and lecturer in addition to being a healer. Aside from this i found one distinct characteristic of Noadi that is similar to the Babaylan is that  the ancestor spirits make a human aware of his or her abilities by creating disturbances, for example by giving the future shaman a mental disorder or illness that will lead to a near death experience. Through these experiences can the new shaman become aware of his or her gifts and calling as a shaman.

As i search to understand the Traditional Medicine of Norway, i saw a video in YouTube that describes its Traditional Medicine. Let us watch this video posted by Rachel Gessner published on January 29, 2016.

I got another video found and its an interview with the Grand Grand Daughter of a Famous Traditional Healer in Norway.

Empowering PITAHC and soon PITCHC

I have seen a campaign to revise the Philippine Institute of Traditional Alternative Healthcare which was created from the Republic Act 8423 which was signed and approved on the 9th of December 1997. On this act it is declared that:

“It is the policy of the State to improve the quality and delivery of health care services to the Filipino people through the development of traditional and alternative health care and its integration into the national health care delivery system.

It shall also be the policy of the State to seek a legally workable basis by which indigenous societies would own their knowledge of traditional medicine. When such knowledge is used by outsiders, the indigenous societies can require the permitted users to acknowledge its source and can demand a share of any financial return that may come from its authorized commercial use.”

And with this law being implemented, the Philippine Institute of Traditional Alternative Health Care was established. But what do this Institution do?

On the said law, the Institute has mandated to do the following:

(a) To encourage scientific research on and develop traditional and alternative health care systems that have direct impact on public health care;

(b) To promote and advocate the use of traditional, alternative, preventive and curative health care modalities that have been proven safe, effective, cost effective and consistent with government standards on medical practice;

(c) To develop and coordinate skills training courses for various forms of traditional and alternative health care modalities;

(d) To formulate standards, guidelines and codes of ethical practice appropriate for the practice of traditional and alternative health care as well as in the manufacture, quality control and marketing of different traditional and alternative health care materials, natural and organic products, for approval and adoption by the appropriate government agencies;

(e) To formulate policies for the protection of indigenous and natural health resources and technology from unwarranted exploitation, for approval and adoption by the appropriate government agencies;

(f) To formulate policies to strengthen the role of traditional and alternative health care delivery system; and

(g) To promote traditional and alternative health care in international and national conventions, seminars and meetings in coordination with the Department of Tourism, Duty Free Philippines, Incorporated, Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation and other tourism-related agencies as well as non-government organizations and local government units.

But what kind of Traditional, Alternative, Preventive and Curative Health Care modalities they are promoting? Let us see on their website that can be found at http://pitahc.gov.ph

Indeed it is Traditional but not Indigenous to our land. On the new proposed law by the Abono Partylist Representative Hon. Conrado M. Estrella III, he introduced to the Philippine House of Representative 17th Congress the House Bill 7950 which is An Act Empowering The Philippine Institute of Traditional and Complementary Health Care by vesting upon it regulatory powers, providing it with augmented Human resources and upgraded equipment, establishing testing laboratories and field offices, amending certain sections of Republic Act 8423 and appropriating funds thereof.

On this bill it is said that PITAHC will known as PITCHC or Philippine Institute of Traditional and Complementary Health Care instead of Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care; and the Power of Philippine Food and Drug Administration will be vested on the said Institute on top of all of the powers given to it by the law. By giving such power it will also augment its human resources, upgrade equipment, and establishment of testing laboratories and field offices of its own. As it was said on the title of this bill, there is a huge amount of money that will be given to the institute.

But with regards to this, who are covered on this Bill as an amendment to Republic Act 8423? And how do this bill define Traditional Medicine?

HB 7950 traditional medicine definition

Traditional Medicine here is clearly identified by this bill which is:

CHINESE, INDIAN AND OTHER FOREIGN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE.

Whereas the Complementary Medicine on this bill is clearly identified:

complementary medicine

But where is Hilot here? On the said bill we found Hilot categorized as Traditional Health Care Modalities.

hilot traditional healthcare modalities

It seems that the creator of this bill is still unsure of what Hilot is as it caption in small letter “h” as the practice of “hilot”.

So what is bothersome with this bill?

Well aside from the new venue of corruption within the Institution, they are empowered to:

regulatory power

This will be a new Power to be invested to the institute. But unfortunately on the old law which is the RA 8423 they only have to formulate a code of ethics and standards for the practice of traditional and alternative health care modalities for approval and adoption by the appropriate professional and government agencies and other functions. And from 1997 up to the present, they have only formulated standards for foreign modalities such as the practice of Acupuncture, Chiropractic, and Naturopathy in the Philippines though i have to commend Tesda which is an attached agency of Philippine Department of Labor and Employment for creating a Training Standards and Regulation on Hilot Wellness which i also advocated to be revised. But with this new bill, all of these practices will be regulated by PITCHC.

With regards to the practice of Traditional Medicine there is an exemption:

exemption

Here your worth must be proven. You must be a tenured Hilot Practitioner and receiving no complain from your patient. But the question is, how the tenured Manghihilot will be recognized when they are uneducated since their knowledge has been handed down without the influence of formal education and training?

Well there are more about this law that we need to be vigilant and on guard. This law will affect us and the preservation of our Philippine Traditional Indigenous Healing Arts and Sciences. Whereas, our teaching here will be branded as Quackery as they have seen us to be on the sidestream as our own Government don’t give recognition to the healing modality that took care of the Health of our Ancestors.

Attune to the Energies of your Home

The common problem of people living abroad (outside Philippines) as they learn Hilot Pahid from us they may opt out to perform Pagsasala when they go back to their home country because in their country there is no banana leaf available. But that should not be a problem.

268094_10150238501021537_8115253_n

If there are no banana leaves, there are other alternative aside from Banana Tree. Traditionally when there is no banana leaf the Manghihilot use cellophane or paper to do pagsasala, but in Hilot Academy we refrain our practitioners in doing that but instead use different leaf that is similar to the texture of the Banana Leaf.

Pagsasala is a Pre Hilot Pahid procedure which prepare the body of the client for a deeper treatment session. It could also become a stand alone treatment due to its therapeutic nature of detoxification as well as in providing rich in oxygen nutrients to the skin. The pagsasala ritual acts as a cardio pulmonary resuscitation using the leaves.

So in using glass or plastic, instead of releasing oxygen it will only release carbon and other toxins inside the body through the pores. So better use banana leaf or any other green leaf that has smooth surface.

As Manghihilot you are encouraged to attuned to the energies of the place where you live. Take a walk along the neighborhood early in the morning. See if there are plants or trees nearby. Recognize each of them by breathing with them. Recognize their scent. Recognize their texture by touch. When there are no plant or trees nearby, find a garden shop and start cultivating plants in your home. Or better yet go to the supermarket and find Turmeric Rhizome or Ginger and plant it.

As manghihilot, we must refrain ourselves to be limited on the tools we use in Healing. We already have learned that all the things we need are already provided to us by the Universe. As much as possible we only use herbs that is endemic into our place and as we use it we also cultivate and propagate them so that they will continue to provide the medicine we use and need. You as Manghihilot has the responsibility not only to your life but also to the life of our Planet.

Hilot is a Choice

img201905091754021982077415.jpgI apologize to all my friends who ask me to join or subscribe to their company who sells self care or home care products such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, feminine wash, oils, lotions, ointments, etc.

I appreciate your concern but i apologize for refusing your offer.

I am HILOT.

And for everyone Information, like i always tell here that HILOT IS NOT A MASSAGE.

As Manghihilot we also make our own self care products.

This is the reason why i teach Hilot so that i may share to the world the techniques on how not to be enslaved by commercialism and capitalism.

I understand that all of us wants to earn money. It is not bad because all of us are enslaved of it already so we really need to make money.

In making money we need to work; and in working we need strength; in having strength we need to be healthy. And on being Healthy we also have a choice.

Introducing Hilot gives the people of the world to choose the type of healthcare procedures they want to apply into their lives.

They may choose to use synthetic products of the conventional medicine or they may choose Traditional Medicine.

On the part of Traditional Medicine, it is still wide for there are many choices also such as what the Philippine Institute of Traditional Alternative Health Care is promoting which is the Traditional and Complementary Medicine that is usually Chinese Oriental Medicine.

The problem with our Society specially with the said institute, they have forgotten to promote our very own HILOT WHICH IS OUR TRADITIONAL INDIGENOUS AND NATURAL MEDICINE.

And on this Case as Manghihilot, i will live to promote it and apply it in to my life. I will do this until the time that our own Government will recognize it and give importance to it. And so as i plead also to all my friends to support and use our very own Medicine which is Hilot.

Last year i ask my Former boss in Tesda why the Training Standard and Regulation of Hilot Wellness Massage cant be change, she just said that it could not be undone. So that means, until that regulation will not be re written it will continue to be implemented until the original and authentic Hilot will be lost and people around the world will think that what they are implementing is right.

Well if that is so, Hilot will just remain as Massage and the medicine and application of Herbs, Heat, Light, Time and Water will be ignored and forgotten by the future so called manghihilot.

Italian Hilot Guaritore

Meeting new people around the world provides a venue for learning opportunity.  And the best learning experience you will have is when you live together at home. Our own Home is the first School every individual have. This is where our behavior is first formed and molded. In our own home is where we receive first love and care that we treasure most. We receive our life lesson from our Mother and Father, so as to our brother and sister and other relatives. They become our role model in living our life.

Hilot is an experiential modality of healing rather than academic. It’s method are learned not through theories and scholarly manner but through experience. It is first passed down by the Divinity to the Babaylan; and the Babaylan to the Community. In every Filipino Home, there is one who usually stand as a Healer in the Family and mostly the mothers.  Indeed in our Home, my Mother is our Healer. And now that she have crossed the veil, it is now my turn to continue the Healing Tradition of Hilot in our Family. And as a mission in preserving our Hilot, I am sharing it to the world as my Legacy of love to mankind.

Hilot as we all know it here is the Philippine Traditional Medicine. Indeed it is from the Philippines but its practice is not limited to the Filipino only. The wisdom of Hilot is not about the actual application of the procedures but the Discipline and Wisdom of the practitioner to provide love and care. In sharing our Love and Care does not require us to have a highest educational Diploma or Title, but only our willingness to share. Yes Sharing is the right term instead of giving or providing.  Because when we share Hilot, we do not need have to be empty handed unlike in giving you totally left nothing for you. In sharing all of us enjoy the benefit of Hilot. We do not take the illness nor give our power but we share it to one another to improve ourselves, our health and our life.

This is what we experience with our Ayurvedic Therapist from Turin, Italy. We share our Hilot to him as he also share his Art and Healing Modality to us.  Agar Agar is our newest Hilot Binabaylan from Turin, Italy.  He took our lesson on the 23rd of July that he completed on the 29th of July 2019. He will go back to Italy on the 31st of July so we all wish him Buon Viaggio.
