What kind of oil do we use?

This is an experiment showing the difference between nutritive oil vs. mineral oil that is usually used in Spa and Massage Clinics.

In Hilot Wellness Massage we do apply Nutritive oil such as Virgin Coconut Oil or oil that is rich in nutrients.  The use of oil in Hilot Pahid sequence is not just to lubricate the skin in applying the sequence of Haplos, Hagod, Pisil, Pindot and Piga but it has its own healing properties it self.  We believe that our medicine is not just for topical application but it can also be taken internally. Such as our Binabaylan Healing Oil it can be taken internally and not only applied topically.

Whereas Mineral Oil belongs to the class of chemicals called hydro carbons, which are compounds that is composed of Carbon and Hydrogen. Indeed they have emolient properties because of their low volatility and smoothing texture when applying to the skin and with this it build up barriers to the skin which can clog the pores. Since it  create barriers it damage the skin by increasing water loss.

The power behind the oil of manghihilot

IMG20181103104209Throughout the ages, the common Filipino people have a bottle of Healing Oil kept in their home altar. Within these bottle relies the health and life of their Family. Whenever a family member is in pain or have illness, the bottle of oil is used to be applied on the person to invoke healing to come and make the person whole again.  This bottle of oil also becomes a detector if there are some evil forces nearby their home. It is seen that the oil inside the bottle will become bubbly, or the outside surface of the bottle has moist as if the oil spilled out or even the oil inside the bottle is boiling. This is why we often see a bottle of healing oil being sold nearby churches. Because the oil need to be blessed in order for its properties to take effect.

In our Old Tradition, the Powerful healing oil should be made by a Babaylan who is also a Healer. It is done during the Full Moon of Friday during Holy Week. For about a month, the healer gather all the it’s ingredients in the mountain and on the time of the Full Moon he will cook it as he invoke the power of the God to be present as he make the Holy Oil. From the concocted oil, Life and Death will bow down to all who possess this sacred oil.

In this video as you can see, you can dip your hands into a boiling hot healing oil while making it and will not burn you. Since it is made of freshly picked and pounded organic herbs, you will feel its hot but it will not burn you because of the healing and cooling effect of the herbs.

RICE in Pilay Tapilok (Sprain)

HILOT TAPILOKHilot is the Traditional Medicine of the Philippines. It is the traditional cure for the illness known as Pilay. Pilay has many form but it literally means Brokenness. According to FreeDictionary.com, Broken means forcibly separated into two or more pieces; it also means fractured.

Pilay is the most appropriate term to use rather than sakit which describes pain as a symptom of pilay.Sprain or Tapilok is one form of Pilay as a result of action of man in breaking the natural and universal law. It is a wrench or twist of the ligaments of (an ankle, wrist or joint) violently so as to cause pain and swelling but not dislocation.

As a First Aid, Medical professional advise the public to do the RICE treatment.

*Rest by avoiding activities that cause pain, swelling or discomfort.
* Ice. use an ice pack or ice slush bath immediately for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat every two to three hours while you’re awake.
*Compression. To help stop swelling, compress the ankle with an elastic bandage until the swelling stops. Don’t hinder circulation by wrapping too tightly. Begin wrapping at the end farthest from your heart.
*Elevation. To reduce swelling, elevate your ankle above the level of your heart, especially at night. Gravity helps reduce swelling by draining excess fluid.

NORWAY TRADITIONAL MEDICINE

Last night i view our WordPress Traffic report and see who view us and i found that there are 5 views coming from Norway. So i started to check on this European Country and check it’s Traditional Medicine.

NORWAY VIEWS HABI

norway-flag-stdNorway , officially as the Kingdom of Norway, is a Nordic Country in Northern Europe whose territory comprises the western and northern most portion of the Scandanavian peninsula; the remote island of  Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard are also part of the Kingdom of Norway.   The Name Norge which means “The Northern Way” originally pertained to a region of the country before political consolidation under Harald the Fair-Haired around 900 C.E. In later use, the country’s name indicates its location on the northern periphery of Europe. Oslo is the Capital City of Norway and their form of Government is Unitary Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy ruled by a King and their State Religion is Christianity where the King is the head of the State Church employing Bishops and Priest in the administrative structure.

The Traditional Medicine of Norway is shaped by both Christianity and Traditional Sami (an Indigenous group in Norway) Nature Worship. The healing rituals may include prayer, the use  of tools such as moss, water, stones, wools and soil. In Norway, Traditional Healing is categorized as Traditional Medicine and itsa modalities offered are cupping, blood-stemming, laying on of hands, healing prayers and rituals. The Traditional Healers are mostly non-professional and non-commercial therapist.

According to World Health Organization, almost everyone in Norway is allowed to treat patients, regardless of training or profession. However, only allopathic physicians, and to some extent dentists and persons assisting physicians and under the guidance of a physician, are allowed to use the title “Doctor of Medicine”, use a title indicating a specialty in a specific illness, or advertise- although anyone can place an announcement in the press that contains only a name, address, consultation hours, and general information on services provided.

It is quite interesting to know that there is a Traditional Medicine practice in Norway that is known as Guvllar. Guvllar means traditional healer, the other term used for traditional healer are “buorideaddji” (healer) “diehti” (one who knows), and “oaidnu” (clairvoyant). All of these terms originates from “noaidevuohta” who is a pre Christian Priest/ Healer of Norway like our very own Babaylan in the Philippines.

A noaidi has the ability to listen and see beyond the appearance of all things, and to understand their true nature; a disseminator of knowledge, and also an artist, seer and lecturer in addition to being a healer. Aside from this i found one distinct characteristic of Noadi that is similar to the Babaylan is that  the ancestor spirits make a human aware of his or her abilities by creating disturbances, for example by giving the future shaman a mental disorder or illness that will lead to a near death experience. Through these experiences can the new shaman become aware of his or her gifts and calling as a shaman.

As i search to understand the Traditional Medicine of Norway, i saw a video in YouTube that describes its Traditional Medicine. Let us watch this video posted by Rachel Gessner published on January 29, 2016.

I got another video found and its an interview with the Grand Grand Daughter of a Famous Traditional Healer in Norway.

Kilubansa Healing Ritual Ceremony

kilubansaAs a Manghihilot who lives in this modern time, we see and acknowledge the works of our Traditional Healers who embrace and incorporate their faith in their healing practices such as the Albularyo and Spiritual Healers. But most of these healers already have embraced the Colonial Spirituality such as the Islamic Faith and Catholicism. And on the remote areas of our country even though they call on the Ancient Names of their tribal God still they equate these names to the Christian God or saints.  The Philippines has almost 110 Ethno Linguistic Groups and from these groups the name of God are called differently according to their spoken language and dialect. But as i search for a Local God of Healing in the Philippines, there is one name mentioned that has no origin and historical support. And that God is known as KILUBANSA.

Kilubansa is the God of Healing and he is the Father of Dihas who is the Goddess of Herbal Medicine. Aside from this information that we have seen online, there are no other text written to describe of his origin. This is the reason why on December 8, 2011 we conduct a study on this God so that we could unveil his mystical powers. on healing. And with that we have created a Facebook Page to his account so that his memory will remain and his work of healing will continue to this present time and to the future.

Today through Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. the healing works of Kilubansa has been revealed to us. Through years of practice and working with the energies of Kilubansa. We have rediscovered his ways of Healing and have successful employed it to people who need healing.

200th WordPressing at HABI

Today on my 200th WordPress post for Hilot Academy i would like to share to everyone my thoughts of being a Manghihilot.

18435_1129546299176_7842019_nI am very thankful that from the moment i decide to share the Knowledge of Hilot to the world, people start responding to my prayer. I started first as a Spa Therapist at Fitness First Spa. I learned basic massage there and some spa treatment. But as i learn modern spa treatments, i recognize it’s similarity to what i am doing when i was still a young boy that i made suggestion to our Spa Training Manager and accept what i suggest. From then on my manager ask me to develop spa treatments that they could offer on a monthly promotion.

20140709_174431

When i resigned, i plan to go abroad to have a better income opportunity. But when i apply they are looking for a National Certification or License and not just having a Diploma or Certificate of Employment. By the Way i took a Diploma Course in Alternative Medicine at Saint Francis Divine College School of Alternative Medicine headed by the Late Dr. Ruben M. Galang MD. He is the one who give instruction to us and i have worked personally in his Clinic in Cubao, Quezon City for 2 years. This is the formal education i had in college.

amtm certWhen the employment agency i applied to work abroad give me requirements to have a National Certification and License, i went to TESDA QC office and i was referred to Humancare International Inc. to take the National Assessment and Certification. It is just a one day of written test and practical demonstration of what i know in massage. After the exam as they review my documents and see my Diploma in Alternative Medicine they give me recommendation to become a Trainer and Assessor. As i receive my training certificate i was directly endorsed to become an Accredited Trainer and Assessor on Massage Therapy NC II and Hilot Wellness NC II.

And from the certification, i had helped to establish Philippine Japan Hilot Association that is in Imus, Cavite.

But this does not last for long. And i have feel that seeking after for accreditation in following standards are very limiting. So in 2012 i have established Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. which will incorporate the Spiritual Aspect of Healing into Hilot as Philippine Traditional, Natural and Indigenous Medicine.

luntiang aghama

Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. is a religious organization that believes that every individual has our own identity that is unique from the society; and that identity is a sacred gift from the Divine Creator. We believe that our identity is the manifestation of the Divine Power into our life; and this manifestation should be reared and cultivated into each individual lives. And from this ideals of Luntiang Aghama, Hilot Academy was created in order to help people cultivate their own gifts of healing as part of their own unique identity as a Being and as a Filipino.  You may learn more about Luntiang Aghama by clicking on the link HERE.

And now we are doing Hilot as part of the Shrine Activity, i feel the difference of it compared to the standardized Hilot that been promoted in the society. The barriers of limitation has been lifted but the struggles are still going on.

The Struggle of making Hilot work for the practitioner to generate income; the struggle to make Hilot as part of Primary Health Care Delivery System; and the Struggle in uplifting the life of the Common People.

As Manghihilot, i am thinking to stop. I am thinking to change my path. I am thinking to leave this oath of my service and do more in generating money for my self and to my family. I am thinking to delete this site so that no one could ever see this again. But…

I already have started this…. and i am growing old….

I remember my fellow advocate who already have crossed the veil.

Ka Efren Guanzon. Mang Boy Fajardo. Nanay Noni Del Mundo. Ka Victor Donaire.

I don’t know how you live when you are still alive. But your works have marked on the lives of the people whom you touched. The Fight you have started are now on hang. But the struggles of many Manghihilot in our country still continue without any difference.

I ask you now my Fellow Manghihilot whom i met. And to all our Manghihilot Ancestors in the other world to guide us, as we continue Our Works in preserving this ancient science and art of Philippine Traditional Medicine in our Land.

Empowering PITAHC and soon PITCHC

I have seen a campaign to revise the Philippine Institute of Traditional Alternative Healthcare which was created from the Republic Act 8423 which was signed and approved on the 9th of December 1997. On this act it is declared that:

“It is the policy of the State to improve the quality and delivery of health care services to the Filipino people through the development of traditional and alternative health care and its integration into the national health care delivery system.

It shall also be the policy of the State to seek a legally workable basis by which indigenous societies would own their knowledge of traditional medicine. When such knowledge is used by outsiders, the indigenous societies can require the permitted users to acknowledge its source and can demand a share of any financial return that may come from its authorized commercial use.”

And with this law being implemented, the Philippine Institute of Traditional Alternative Health Care was established. But what do this Institution do?

On the said law, the Institute has mandated to do the following:

(a) To encourage scientific research on and develop traditional and alternative health care systems that have direct impact on public health care;

(b) To promote and advocate the use of traditional, alternative, preventive and curative health care modalities that have been proven safe, effective, cost effective and consistent with government standards on medical practice;

(c) To develop and coordinate skills training courses for various forms of traditional and alternative health care modalities;

(d) To formulate standards, guidelines and codes of ethical practice appropriate for the practice of traditional and alternative health care as well as in the manufacture, quality control and marketing of different traditional and alternative health care materials, natural and organic products, for approval and adoption by the appropriate government agencies;

(e) To formulate policies for the protection of indigenous and natural health resources and technology from unwarranted exploitation, for approval and adoption by the appropriate government agencies;

(f) To formulate policies to strengthen the role of traditional and alternative health care delivery system; and

(g) To promote traditional and alternative health care in international and national conventions, seminars and meetings in coordination with the Department of Tourism, Duty Free Philippines, Incorporated, Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation and other tourism-related agencies as well as non-government organizations and local government units.

But what kind of Traditional, Alternative, Preventive and Curative Health Care modalities they are promoting? Let us see on their website that can be found at http://pitahc.gov.ph

Indeed it is Traditional but not Indigenous to our land. On the new proposed law by the Abono Partylist Representative Hon. Conrado M. Estrella III, he introduced to the Philippine House of Representative 17th Congress the House Bill 7950 which is An Act Empowering The Philippine Institute of Traditional and Complementary Health Care by vesting upon it regulatory powers, providing it with augmented Human resources and upgraded equipment, establishing testing laboratories and field offices, amending certain sections of Republic Act 8423 and appropriating funds thereof.

On this bill it is said that PITAHC will known as PITCHC or Philippine Institute of Traditional and Complementary Health Care instead of Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care; and the Power of Philippine Food and Drug Administration will be vested on the said Institute on top of all of the powers given to it by the law. By giving such power it will also augment its human resources, upgrade equipment, and establishment of testing laboratories and field offices of its own. As it was said on the title of this bill, there is a huge amount of money that will be given to the institute.

But with regards to this, who are covered on this Bill as an amendment to Republic Act 8423? And how do this bill define Traditional Medicine?

HB 7950 traditional medicine definition

Traditional Medicine here is clearly identified by this bill which is:

CHINESE, INDIAN AND OTHER FOREIGN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE.

Whereas the Complementary Medicine on this bill is clearly identified:

complementary medicine

But where is Hilot here? On the said bill we found Hilot categorized as Traditional Health Care Modalities.

hilot traditional healthcare modalities

It seems that the creator of this bill is still unsure of what Hilot is as it caption in small letter “h” as the practice of “hilot”.

So what is bothersome with this bill?

Well aside from the new venue of corruption within the Institution, they are empowered to:

regulatory power

This will be a new Power to be invested to the institute. But unfortunately on the old law which is the RA 8423 they only have to formulate a code of ethics and standards for the practice of traditional and alternative health care modalities for approval and adoption by the appropriate professional and government agencies and other functions. And from 1997 up to the present, they have only formulated standards for foreign modalities such as the practice of Acupuncture, Chiropractic, and Naturopathy in the Philippines though i have to commend Tesda which is an attached agency of Philippine Department of Labor and Employment for creating a Training Standards and Regulation on Hilot Wellness which i also advocated to be revised. But with this new bill, all of these practices will be regulated by PITCHC.

With regards to the practice of Traditional Medicine there is an exemption:

exemption

Here your worth must be proven. You must be a tenured Hilot Practitioner and receiving no complain from your patient. But the question is, how the tenured Manghihilot will be recognized when they are uneducated since their knowledge has been handed down without the influence of formal education and training?

Well there are more about this law that we need to be vigilant and on guard. This law will affect us and the preservation of our Philippine Traditional Indigenous Healing Arts and Sciences. Whereas, our teaching here will be branded as Quackery as they have seen us to be on the sidestream as our own Government don’t give recognition to the healing modality that took care of the Health of our Ancestors.
