Going Online Class

Yesterday we start to migrate our training materials to our Online Platform which is the Google Classroom. This training requires the student to have either laptop, desktop, Ipod/Tablet or smart phone. It is advised that your device must have a built in Camera and Microphone. Or When using Laptop or Desktop, we will ask you to secure a Camera so you can you can upload your work to our Classroom. When you use Tablet or Smart Phone, you will be asked to download a web browser either Google Chrome, Mozila Firefox or Microsoft Edge. As a teacher, I am using Laptop and Android Phone that has a Google Chrome Browser. Aside from this if you are using mobile phone, we ask you to also download the following Apps:

  • Google Classroom
  • Google Drive
  • Google Meet

And the activities we could do within the classroom are the following:

  • Read the uploaded Learning Material using Google Document. (Since you have downloaded the Google Drive you can access the Reading Materials to it posted inside the Google Classroom.)
  • Watch the Video Presentation/ Lecture (as you watch, you are asked to take down notes on the subject presented and ask it out during the Video Call Conferencing through Google Meet.)
  • Video Call Conferencing using Google Meet ( this will be real time conversation/ discussion of the things you have noted during the Video Presentation that you have watched through Google Drive/ Youtube.)
  • Answer the Self Assessment/ Evaluation Quiz through Google Form posted in Google Classroom. (With this we could assess and evaluate your learning process)
  • Filming or video recording ( The student will be asked to video record to capture the process on how they will perform the activity task. This will be a form of grading or evaluating your learning capacity as we present the skills through Video Demonstration. In our Live and In person Learning Session we call that as Return Demonstration.)

As its System Administrator and Training Director for this Online Training, it make me feel excited in doing this as it makes us to explore many potential possibilities on how we can promote our Traditional Healing Methodologies using Modern Technology. Indeed, we become the Doorway of Time as we use this modern method in teaching the the old ways of healing arts and sciences.

With these, i want to share to everyone a 6 minutes video that is part of our 60 minutes video lecture presentation on the Non Contact Hilot Healing Modality which is the Mind and Spirit Working.

My thoughts on Hilot Online Training

This June 2020 we are about to implement our Hilot Online Program (HoT). This mean that there will be no Face-to-face classes but instead we are going to transfer the Ancestral Knowledge of Philippine Traditional Healing Arts and Science purely online. This will be a great opportunity for everyone to take class without coming here in the Philippines where ever you are in the world. The Hilot online Training will save you from spending travel fare and room accommodation expenses.

As a requirement, you need to have at least a Desk Top, Laptop, Ipod/Tablet or smart phone that can be connected to Internet. Then on your device you need to have a web browser either Google Chrome, Mozila Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc. You also need to download Google Classroom App, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive and Google Meet for Video Call and Conferencing.

Our expected activities during the class will be the following:

  • Reading Information Sheets
  • Watching Video Presentation/ Demonstration
  • Answering Self Check Evaluations
  • Video Filming for return demonstration/ Observation
  • Video Call/ Conferencing for evaluation/ assessment.

At this moment, Hilot Online Training only provides Non Contact Hilot Modality such as the Mind and Spiritual Workings which will help you to master on Psycho and Emotional Health as well as on Bio Chemistry through employment of Herbs.

Before we make our schedule on the actual training, let me express my self clearly through this Video.

Ever since we start our training program in the Academy, the method of teaching hilot was always been live and in person. It is the same thing that our ancestors do in transferring their knowledge of the Healing Arts and Science to their apprentice. Since Learning Hilot is not just transferring skills knowledge and techniques of healing, but it is more about developing relationship from Students to their teacher. It is the same thing that you will do when you are already practicing Hilot to your patient/client you have to build relationship with them.

Learning in Hilot Academy of Binabaylan is not about satisfying the amount of money you pay to learn Hilot, but it is about gaining experience of what really Hilot is all about. That is the reason why we asked our previous student to stay with us in one roof to learn Hilot with us, because most of the lessons in hilot can not be found on a scheduled learning materials but on the random event that occurs during the training period.

Each words, actions and thoughts that come to us during the days you stay with us are part of the learning process. Each breathe; each emotions and even single creatures that come to pass on our way will give us message that will bring forth learning to us. And now, time is teaching us to evolve and adopt to the modern changes that is happening around us. And we will face this with Faith to the Divine that we will overcome this challenge and bring us success.

So until then, wait for our further announcement on when we are going to start our class this June 2020.

GCQ in Bulacan

The City government of San Jose Del Monte have announced on May 29. 2020 that the Whole Province of Bulacan will under go from Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine to General Community Quarantine as per IATF- EID Resolution No. 40. This only means that still there will be no Face-to-face or in Person Classes for us here in Hilot Academy of Binabaylan.

For almost 3 months we have been affected by this Community Quarantine by staying at home and physical distancing, but the Good Thing with it is that we were able to find ways to make our Training Program more accessible for everyone.  In our Old System, our Training Program requires the student to show up to receive in person guidance in performing task to accomplish the Hilot Procedures, but now You can stay-at-home and still learn some Hilot Modalities that does not require Physical Contact to the Patient.

We Define our Worth

To be honest with everyone, we struggle a lot for the past 2 months with Anxiety and depression as we undergo the Community Quarantine. As Manghihilot, we communicate our mind to Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care that we could help the Essential Health Workers in serving the community to prevent and relieve the symptoms of Covid 19 while the experts are working to find cure and vaccine to end the spread of this deadly virus.

Though we stay at home and physical contact are forbidden, as Manghihilot we employ our non physical contact modality in providing our service to the community. As Human Being, our existence does not limit to our Physical Body alone as we also have our emotional, mental, social and spiritual body.

Our body may not touch one another as we are advised to maintain 2 meters distance apart when we are in public places, but our love and concern from one another will not be separated by this virus as it is more powerful enough than the virus it self.

Instead of protesting as the Government define the worth of Traditional Medicine practitioners such us, we continue to mold up our selves to be the Primary Health Care provider at home.

Yes! Our Home is the most sacred site in our life that we need to defend from the Enemy. We defend and protect our Home by making sure that Life Force will continually flow within and not spill out by having illness among members of our household.

We do that by constant communication, observing proper hygiene, modified diet and supplemental nutrition to boost our immunity and physical activity/ exercise.

Simple Cough, Cold and Fever can be relieved by Hilot. And these can be experienced by our Family members at home. And through the Knowledge of the Healing Arts and Sciences of our Ancestors, we can prevent it to be worst and with that the number of patients that our medical front liners are treating in the hospital will be lessened because we already have treated their conditions at home.

Plants have memories

I start propagating Mulberry Tree only this April 2020 during the Enhance Community Quarantine because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, I made stem cutting from our only tree (that i got from my Tita Edith in Cupang, Muntinlupa) and soak it to water until it grow roots.

Rooting of Mulberry Stem Cutting

When i got success from growing its root i transfer it to our garden. And this month when i checked on it, i am so happy to see that it already bears fruit.

Here we see that when a stem has been cut to its main tree, it remembers it stage when it was cut. This stem cutting was bearing fruit, so when it was cut off from the main tree it stop growing. But when we replant it again, it continue its work in bearing fruit even for a short period of time being replanted. It remembers its work when it was still part of the main tree. The situation that happened to the stem made me think of the same process that happens to reincarnation. When a person die, its soul may chose to be reborn again or reincarnated in order to continue the work s/he is doing in the previous live. We can see this through the behavior a person expresses as s/he grow.

For us who are living right now in the present world, we have our memories of the past that we will pass through the obstacles and challenge of today’s world. Our real selves have already experienced numerous calamities, epedemics and pandemics through out time. And this Time at 2020, we will all overcome this Pandemic and relive our life to the best as we can.

Beat the Heat and Covid 19

Summer is about to end in the Philippines but the heat is still on and the temperature here in the City of San Jose Del Monte, Province of Bulacan reaches 36 degree Celsius or 97 degree Farenheit. As we are struggling to beat Covid 19, many of us who stay at home are also beating the wave of summer heat.

As some people say that summer heat is good to beat covid 19, but do not be comfortable with that as this heat may also bring some disaster towards our health such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, fainting and heat rash. It is said that the elderly, infants and young children, the obese, out door workers (front liners such as the Police, Military and Barangay Tanod at check point), and those with chronic medical conditions are prone to be affected with heat related illness or Hyperthermia.

So what are the signs and symptoms of having hyperthermia?

  • Elevated Body Temperature
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Siezures
  • Confusion and
  • Coma

How to prevent Heat Related Illnesses?

First is to drink a lot of water. Water is a cooling agent that will refresh your body. It is advised that with in an hour you have to take at least 2 to 4 glass of water. Pure water or fresh fruit juice are okay and avoid hot and alcoholic drinks as it will warm up your body.

During hot season the summer heat makes a person to sweat a lot and excessive sweating may consume all the minerals in your body that may cause you to have muscle cramps. With that at least eat a least a pinch of salt or drink sports beverages such as Gatorade. By the Way, Kefir water is a probiotic drink can also help to prevent muscle cramps as it has minerals that is similar to salt. Some of the Water Kefir Grains are being fed not only with sugar but also with a little bit of salt. Aside from Water Kefir as Probiotic Beverage you can also take the LAB from rice water. Watch the Video below in order to learn to make home made probiotic using rice.

Aside from Drinking of course taking a cool bath is the best way to beat the summer. And after that wearing light weight and light colored clothing to cool us down. Staying at Home is the best way to avoid the scorching heat of the sun and cooling down with native abanico fan or pamaypay, electric fan or AC unit. As much as possible plan your activities outdoor and limit travelling specially now that we are all under quarantine. Remember it is not only the heat wave we are trying to beat here but also the pandemic outbreak of Covid 19.

If ever that it occurs to you that you get a Heat Rash, Prickly heat or any skin illness condition due to summer heat it is advised that you apply aloe vera gel on it.

Mindful Eating Habbit

I don’t exactly remember the phrase my teacher told me about having good health. As i remember it, the late Dr. Rueben M. Galang Jr. have told me that “good health starts in the pan”. Well what he mean is that the food that we eat affects our health and it is as we get our daily nutritional needs from the food that we eat.

Many of us loves to eat. And eating was the very first lessons that we have learn as a human. Though to be true to our self it was sucking milk from our mother’s breast was the earliest form of feeding that we have learn. As it is said that breast milk contains all of the essential nutrients, antibodies, and other factors that a new born babies need for growth and development.

As grown up we are not limited anymore in eating the food we want. Aside from the nutritional supply we receive from eating, it also becomes a reward system for us or even a stress reliever. We include food in all occasion and activities of our life. But now-a-days, food has been also become a tool of protest that people promote such as being Vegetarian or Vegan. Though i am not a vegan but i respect them when they are with me by preparing food that they will eat in a vegan style. But whether you eat pure vegetable or meat or combination of both, it is our digestive system that work out to convert the food to be a source of nutrition and energy to our body. As each of us enjoy our individual differences, we should also be mindful of our digestive health.

Yakult Everyday makes our Tummy Okay!

Yakult was the earliest food supplement that i take everyday when i was a child. I believe everyone who was born on the ’70s know yakult. And now-a-days when you go to 7-eleven you will find a contemporary of Yakult which is the Delight and Go Long Cultured Milk. All of these are Probiotic Beverages.

But what is probiotic?

Probiotics are (good bacteria) live micro organism that can provide numerous health benefits such as improved digestion, enhanced immune function, healthier skin and weight loss. All of these are due to the work of probiotics in balancing the activities of the Bad Bacteria which is inside our body that can be found in our gut or tummy. As Human Being aside from the organs, tissues and cells that can be found inside our body there are also numerous bacteria that dwells within us. And the Probiotic are the one who balances it.

According to Healthline, Probiotics provide us health benefits such as:

  • Reduce systemic inflammation
  • reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • lower total bad cholesterol level
  • Improve blood pressure
  • enhance immune function
  • useful for skin health

Being mindful to what we eat will help us to obtain optimum health and wellness. As we strive to live our life in a healthy manner, it should not be too expensive. You can see Probiotic products that you can buy in the market, but these micro organism can be found in nature which you can get for free. There are probiotic formulas available which you can make at home without buying expensive ingredients. The art of fermentation is also one way of culturing live microorganism or good bacteria that is probiotic in nature.

If you want to learn on how to make a Probiotic Beverages and food let us know by filling up the form below.

Galing: Our own ability to heal

In the Tagalog language of the Philippines, there are one word that can be spoken about that has multiple meaning such as the word that we are going to discuss today that has important relevance in Healing. If you are going to take the Hilot Binabaylan Certification class, one of its first lesson is about the definition of terminology that you are to encounter while practicing hilot as we all the true meaning of our Craft which is Hilot.

The word “Galing” written in Baybayin

The first meaning that we are going to discuss about the word “Galing” will pertain to the place of origin.

For example:

“Galing ako sa Bahay para kumuha ng makakain.” in English it is translated as: “I went home to get some food to eat.” In this sentence , we can see that the word “Galing” describes the speaker’ where about which tells that S/he went home. Now. let us see another meaning of this word through this sentence:

Tagalog: “Ang Galing mong Magluto ng Adobo.”

English: “You are great in cooking adobo.”

At this sentence the word “galing” describes the persons ability to cook, thus the meaning of the word “Galing” here pertains to the level of mastery of our ability which is on its highest level. The next definition of the word “Galing” will be described on the following sentence which can be found with a Suffix:

Tagalog: “Magaling na ako. Wala na akong Sakit!”

English: “I am better now. I am not sick anymore!!

On our last sentence, the word “Galing” describes the persons health condition. It shows that in this sentence that the speaker has recovered or relieved from illness.

In hilot, it is important to us to know the persons place of origin and its ability. The illness that the person has limits its ability as his/her souls wonder. As Manghihilot, it is our duty to restore back the persons ability and retrieve his/her soul back to the body.

As a General Principle, we firmly believe that an individual has their own ability to heal themselves. As practitioner of the healing arts and science, we are just a catalyst and facilitator of healing. We integrate the healing wonders of nature that can be found in our surroundings from the 8 directions of the world. We use this gift of nature to make the sick person whole again thus we say: “Magaling ka na!” or “You are now Healed!”

Healing with Plant Medicine: Makabuhay (Tinospora Crispa)

I start to cultivate Makabuhay Vine way back 2013 as i need it to make a charm to improve health and long life. Though this herb was commonly known to have an abortive properties, I still hold on to the meaning of it’s name which is makabuhay or the one that promotes life. As Manghihilot or Traditional Healer, we do not just work on manipulating the Physical Body of the person to treat them but we also make medicine that could restore and maintain good health. A person Health for us as we see it does not limit to the Physical Movement of the person but we see also his/her emotional, mental, social and spiritual health as a basis for Holistic Wellness. And the medicine we provide is not also limited on Physical Manipulation of the Body but also we do preparation of Medicine for internal consumption, topical application or to carry it in their person such as in the use of Amulets, Talismans or Charms.

On my personal practice and use of Makabuhay, i mix the dried herbs and vines to alcoholic drink such as rum in a tincture and add few drops to a glass of water before i sleep. The vines can also be added to make a docoction of coconut oil to be applied on the part of the body that is affected by rheumatism and arthritis.

Studies suggest that Makabuhay has cardiotonic, antioxidant, antidiarheal, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antiproliferative, hypolipidemic, antimalarial, and antinociceptive properties. According to Medical Health Guide, the list are the Traditional Medicinal Uses of Makabuhay vine:

  • Makabuhay roots, stems and leaves are used as herbal treatment for fevers, malaria. Makabuhay leaves and roots are pounded then dissolved in cold water. Applied with a soft cloth over the nape, forehead, underarms and other body parts to bring down the body temperature.
  • Makabuhay poultice is used to treat gout, arthritis, and rheumatism by reducing pain and edema.
  • Makabuhay is used to treat skin diseases (athlete’s foot, scabies, etc.), promotes wound healing and alleviate skin itching. Makabuhay tonic is believed to promote overall good health and longevity, improves memory, improves skin tone and texture, and provides energy.
  • Makabuhay tonic is also used to treat fever and malaria. Makabuhay tonic is used to treat gastrointestinal and digestive problems, which includes diarrhea, hyperacidity, abdominal pains, gas pains (kabag), vomiting, dyspepsia, dysentery, colitis, constipation, loss of appetite and even worm infestation.
  • Makabuhay is also used in the treatment of diabetes, heart problems, hepatitis, anemia, impotence, tuberculosis, jaundice,

Keeping our Immunity Strong

It was September of 2019 when Jeremy Pascal and his wife Gerone of Grenoble, France became our Student here in the Academy. As they spent days of training with us, it is through Jeremy that we have received and important gift that we still enjoy today or even on the days to come and it is the water Kefir Grains.

What is water kefir grains?

Water kefir grains are clusters of good bacteria and yeasts living in a symbiotic relationship. They are held together by a polysaccharide (dextran) that produce Lactobacillus Hilgardii. These clusters of bacteria, yeast and polysaccharide look like crystals or grains of jelly that makes the kefir water work as probiotic drink. Water Kefir Grains is also known as Tibicos, Japanese Water Crystals, and California Bees. There is a speculation that Water Kefir Grains originated in Mexico, however, there are stories that it originates in Tibet, the Caucasus Mountians, and the southern peninsula of Ukraine.

What are the Health benefits of drinking Water Kefir?

Water Kefir is a probiotic beverage linked to various health benefit including improved immunity and even protection against cancer.

Probiotic are a type of beneficial bacteria found in your gut or microorganism that lives in our intestine. It plays an integral role in almost every aspect of health, from cancer prevention to immune function and beyond.

In this time of Pandemic of the Coronavirus Disease, everyone of us must have a strong immune system because it is our body’s natural defense system. It’s an intricate network of cells, tissues, and organs that bands together to defend our body against invaders. Those invaders can include bacteria, viruses, parasites, even a fungus, all with the potentials that can make us sick.

Aside from drinking Probiotic Drinks as Immune Booster food supplement, there are other natural ways we could strengthen our Immunity and they are the following:

  1. Get enough sleep.
  2. Eating Green Leafy Vegetables
  3. Eating more healthy fats
  4. Eat more fermented foods or take a probiotic supplements.
  5. Limit added sugars
  6. Engage in moderate exercise
  7. Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water
  8. Manage our stress level
  9. Take food supplement wisely

By taking this steps in maintaining your immune system strong may prevent you from having illness.

Healing with Plant Medicine: Lagundi aka Vitex Negudo

I remember as a kid when we have cough and fever, my mother will pick up some lagundi leaves, oregano and ginger. She will pound it together and extract the juice of the combined herbs and make us drink the juice. She will add little amount of sugar so that it may taste good.

Lagundi aka Vitex Negudo

Lagundi or Vitex Negudo was known in English as the 5 leaves chaste tree. It is one of the 10 Herbs that the Philippine Department of Health approved to be known as Herbal Medicine. Though there are lot herbs can be found in the Philippines that shows potency as medicine but only 10 were approved to be classified as medicine and one of it is Lagundi.

Lagundi has been tested clinically to be effective in treatments of cold, flu, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and pharyngitis. With the rise of Coronavirus Disease we have seen Caloocan City is distributing Paracetamol and Lagundi as part of their help to the citizen in battling Covid 19. Though there is no record that it has been used to treat the disease but it plays role in the prevention of the spread of the virus. As a herbal medicine that been recognized to treat respiratory problem, this might be a promising herb that also has a potential relief or even cure to the Coronavirus Disease.

Though at this moment, the role of Hilot in the Philippines works on preventive and promotive health care, taking lagundi as tea will protect an individual from having the symptoms of the disease as long as the guidelines on social distancing, hand washing and physical fitness is observed. Healthcare professionals can also consider administering this herbs to treat the symptoms as it is used to treat colds, fever, flu, chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis, rheumatism, dyspepsia, boils, diarrhea and certain skin and digestive complaints.

Below are the list of traditional use of Lagundi:

  • Expectorant/Cough Remedy
  • Sore throat relief
  • Anti-asthma/Bronchodilator
  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Diuretic
  • Antinociceptive/Analgesic
  • Anti-allergy
  • Antihyperglycemic
  • Antimicrobial
  • Anthelmintic /Antiparasitic
  • Promotes wound healing
  • Hepatoprotective
  • Improves digestion
  • Carminative
  • Relieves anxiety
  • Promotes relaxation
  • Insecticidal
  • Reduces risk of cancer

As Traditional Medicine Practitioner, we recommend you to see your healthcare professional or Certified Manghihilot before taking any herbal remedy. It is good to identify the symptoms first in order to have a proper treatment that will result to a successful cure of any ailments. Self Medication is discouraged and right procedure of herbal administration is required.
