Jamee and Julz journey in learning Hilot

This is what had happen when we start our class of Hilot ng Aghamang Binabaylan Training this year. We thought that people will not come due to the event of Tandang Taal Volcanic eruption. At first they were hesitant to come and ask if it is safe to go here in the Philippines. Originally our class was scheduled from the 17th of January 2020 but it was moved on the 24th of January.

We welcome our first batch of trainees on the 24th of January 2020 and they are Julz Bolinayen of Hawaii and Jamee Pineda of Washington, DC. They were accompanied by Julz cousin sherwin and have a short orientation and give them a view of what to expect during the training. After the orientation we do our first activity on activating the hands energy centers though the paper folding exercise as facilitated by Lakay.

Our student were amazed knowing their power hand and have enjoyed discovering their inner abilities through the exercise. Indeed that our Hilot ng Aghamang Binabaylan Training is more about self discovery of our own abilities through communication with our inner selves and channeling the message of the spirit to our conscious mind.

Lakay have shared his knowledge on the 5 elements and on how it affect our lives. By knowing the elements we become an alchemist that balance the flow of each element in our lives by determining its functions to our body. By sharing our techniques we allow each of them to practice their acquired skills in Tawas which is our Hilot method of Scanning or Diagnosis which is also a form of Divination.

Let us hear now what Julz have to say to her partner Jamee on his egg tawas divination.

As she is done reading, we ask her how she gets the information in reading Jamee’s egg.

Now Julz have done her part, its now Jamee’s turn to read the Egg tawas for Julz.

Lets hear Jamee on how he attuned to the Egg Tawas.

After they have done performing the diagnostic ritual of tawas, we invite both of them to come to our Shrine to receive their Binabaylan Name. The ritual was facilitated by Apu and Lakay in Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. Lot 79 Phase A Francisco Ave., Brgy. Francisco Homes Narra, City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, Philippines.

As Hilot Binabaylan, we are not just working with the Physical Body but as well as with the patients emotional, mental and spiritual body. And we do not just heal the body it self but we also do heal the environment where the person lives. This is the main difference of the Traditional Medicine Practitioner to the practitioners of Modern Medicine, we care and treat not only the illness but also the entirety of the person.

There are more of Julz and Jamee’s story on their journey of learning the Philippine Traditional Indigenous and Natural Medicine. IRR of PITAHC Defined Hilot

Yesterday as i checked on the Website of Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care i saw on their home page that they already have revised the Implementing Rules and Regulation of the Republic Act 8423 or other wise known as the Philippine Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997. This law creates the Department of Health institution on Traditional and Alternative Medicine. In this Revised Implementing Rules and Regulation of PITAHC they have stated their objectives in encouraging Scientific Research on the Traditional Medicine as well as to develop alternative healthcare system that has direct impact on public health. It is also stated in the IRR the promotion and advocate the use of traditional, alternative healthcare modalities that are proven safe, effective, cost effective and consistent with government standards on health care practices.

Screenshot 2020-01-21 at 11.38.03 AM

You may check and download the IRR by clicking it here.

On Rule 2 of the IRR we can see the definition of terms and we found on section 1 and phrase P, they have defined Hilot as to the science and art of the ancient Filipino healing grounded on the principle of balance of the physical elements, together with the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the person, with the use of manipulations, “bulong” or “oracion”, and medicinal plants for the prevention of disease and for the restoration and maintenance of health and well-being. They have beautifully defined Hilot being the Science and Art of Ancient Filipino Healing but through their definition they have omitted the function of the Manghihilot in performing diagnostic procedure such as in the practice of tawas and pagpupulso.

We also notice in their definition of Traditional Medicine is different from what the World Health Organization have defined it.

PITAHC Definition of TRADITIONAL MEDICINE as the sum total of knowledge, skills and practice on health care, not necessarily explicable in the context of modern, scientific, philosophical framework, but recognized by the people to help maintain and improve their health towards the wholeness of their being, the community and society, and their interrelations based on culture, history, heritage and consciousness.

While the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION defined Traditional Medicine as:

It is the sum total of the knowledge, skill, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures, whether explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illness.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

In Hilot Academy we follow the Definition of World Health Organization thus we claim that Hilot is not just a Healing Art and Science but as a Traditional Medicine. As Manghihilot we are not just a Healer but we are a Traditional Medicine Practitioner which means we apply our knowledge to maintain health, for diagnosis, prevention, improvement or treatment of Physical, Emotional and Mental Illnesses. As manghihilot we employ our knowledge on the use of Herbs (Halaman), Heat (Init), Light (Liwanag), Time & Words (Orasyon+ Prayer and Time)  and water to affect cure to our patient.

Why do we call our recipient as Patient?

Patient Tatay Ricardo of Fairview, QC

Last September 24, 2019 i accept the case of Tatay Ricardo who suffered from  CVA or stroke. It’s been already a year when the Family met me and try my service. Before me tatay rick had undergone Physical Therapy sessions and have acquired services from massage therapist who do home service. He even got burn when one of the therapist they hire give him a hot stone massage to awaken his nerves and blood vessels. Instead of getting well he got injury. I assessed his condition by asking some question. He could speak up well and the words he utters are understandable. He describe and demonstrated that he could not move his left part of the body from the upper arms and lower leg but his right side of the body are working well. After knowing every details i need to know, i started calling back the lost soul of tatay ricardo to be one with his body again. I apply the Binabaylan Healing oil and do the 5 elemental hilot manipulation to awaken his nerves and blood vessels. I also touch the healthy part of his body in order to assist the flow of life force in his body to create balance.  At first there is so much radiating pain as a response to every healing touch i made. This signifies that his body is alive and responding to every touch i made. After a few stroke i ask tatay rick to describe the severity of the pain and thankfully in every movement the pain lessen until there was none.

In healing with Hilot, there must be 3 elements always present in every session:

  1. Faith in God
  2. Faith in the Healing of Hilot
  3. Faith in your Self.

We acknowledge God in every healing session we make in Hilot as we believe that God is the ultimate source of Healing as he is also the source of Life. Secondly we believe that as Manghihilot, we are the channel of the Divine Blessings of God to heal all illnesses known to mankind and to maintain the Life Force Flowing through all creation; and lastly, the individual must also believe and trust their own ability to be healed and they must also be willing to participate in God’s power to Re Create life within us. The Patient and the Manghihilot acts as God’s Co Creator in Re Creating Life within the patient. The healing of hilot does not always take effect instantaneously. It also requires the element of time in order to create the artwork of life beautifully in our life.

As Manghihilot we call our recipient as Patient because it really require patience on both side in order for the healing effect take place. And here we can see that as Manghihilot, we just don’t give massage for relaxation because we do not pamper our patients but instead we teach them to be responsible in their own health. Now let us take a look at Tatay Ricardo as he progress with our Hilot Session for 3 months.

To be a Manghihilot

76602199_3198629430211362_4132682579490897920_oAs manghihilot we see first the solid ground where we stand and not the number of people we are going to heal and the amount of money we are going to earn for our treatment services. We heal the land first and cultivate it and allow the healing herbs to grow and be our tool in healing. We do not have the power of healing of our own but what we have is the power of life that animates us. And through the Life Force that flows within us, we share it first to the land and utilise the power of nature to provide life force in the land and later on we use the life force we can find in nature to provide cure to the illness of our fellow men. Indeed we should not be called as a Healer but instead we should be called as Care Taker of the Land. Because our tools in healing relies on the providence of the Divine that can be found in our Environment.

Healing it self does not come to the personal power of the healer. Our academic success, certificates, diploma, licenses does not make a person well and healed but through nature’s gift of life. As Manghihilot we must have more concern about the land where we live, the water we drink and the air we breathe. And we pray that the Sun and Moon to continue to provide us the light we need together with all the stars in the heavens above to guide us in our daily life while we are living in this world.

This is the reason why most of our ancestor manghihilot are not educated nor licensed professional because nature taught them the ways of healing. The evidence of their education can be measured through the number of Diploma, Certificate and Licenses we can earn but through the plants and herbs they grow and use to have a successful healing session with the person that is ill.

Value of Hilot

Hilot is part of the Filipino Culture that needs to revive and preserve. For Generations our Ancestors rely on it on the maintenance of their health and well being. As time passed by modern medicine has been introduced and slowly removing Hilot by giving its duties and responsibilities to the modern practitioners of Medicine. Our Manghihilot who was once a General Practitioner of Healthcare in our country has been demoted into a lesser degree and function. It is sad to say when you ask people about who are the Manghihilot they will only recall them as Massage Therapist. And this is also what the Philippine Government think about the Manghihilot when they created the Training Regulation of TESDA Hilot Wellness Massage NC2 Training Program.

And using their promulgated training regulation,  it is written in their Healing concepts the valuing process. In this concept of healing the manghihilot see each patient to be important and has purpose. Thus the manghihilot provide care to maintain the value of each person that they may continue to progress. Through the Life force that is within us, we continue to live and move to create and establish our life. But if we personified the Ancient Healing Arts and Science of the Filipino people, we can see it now as a person that is dying and loosing its purpose. As a healer we must bring back the purpose of Hilot in order to preserve it to last for another Generation or maintain it for ever.

IMG_20170712_163307This is the purpose of Hilot Academy of Binabaylan. We aim to preserve Hilot by promoting it and provide training and services so that people will still know and appreciate the beauty of what our ancestors have experience through Hilot. We are giving High Value to our non tangible cultural heritage which has been passed down to us by our ancestors. If we just set aside Hilot and allow people to think of it as a Massage, the true meaning of purpose of Hilot will die and will be buried into the land of those who are not remembered.

Thus in this present times ,despite of the presence of the Government Authorities promoting Hilot as Massage, we in the Academy are working hard to revive the folkloric aspect of hilot and bridge the gap of mysticism into a more acceptable scientific approach in Healthcare.

Herbal Medicine in Hilot

Training provider teach Hilot in acronym form specially in TESDA. Many have taught Hilot as an acronym for Halaman (Herbs), Init (Heat) , Lamig (Cold), Orasyon (Prayer) at Tubig (Water). But in Hilot Academy we teach Hilot as Halaman (Herbs), Init (Heat), Liwanag (Light), Orasyon (Timing and Prayer) and Tubig (Water). Since the first letter that we can find in Hilot is about Herbs, Hilot Academy teaches Herbal preparation for treatment. The usage of herbs may go externally which means that you apply the herbs to your skin for treatment or internally which you literally put the herbs inside your body through the mouth and digest it.

In taking herbs internally we usually take it as a tea or salad and the modern version is we take it in capsule or tablet form. Between the two i prefer to use the tablet as it work faster than in capsule form.

Learn more about Healing Herbs and its preparation to use as a medicine by enrolling with us to our Herbal Hilot Class.

Takip Kuhol/Gotu Kola/ Centella Asiatica

When i learn the amazing benefits of this plant years ago i walked around our subdivision to see if there are wild Gotu Kola that grew along the sidewalk and i did found. I ask the spirit of the place to get some and be replanted in our house. When i have able to multiply it, i taught to my mother its wonderful benefit to her health. And she was amazed by its powers and how it help her that she recommend it also to our neighbors and friends. As she continue to recommend it to our neighbors our Gotu Kola get exhausted. I tried to save some but it did not become successful.

74790619_3114220221985617_4836917212985950208_oYears passed by i try to look again along the street if there are wild gotu kola growing. But it seems people learned the importance of this plant that they kept it inside their yard. So i ended up looking for it on a Garden Shop. But this plant where i now grow is i bought beside Quiapo Church in Manila. It cost me Php 100.00 for this plant. And gladly i am growing it that we can make medicine out of it.

Gotu Kola or Takip Kuhol leaves can be eaten as a Salad. So every morning as we woke up, we pick 7 to 9 leaves of Gotu Kola and wash it over tap water and eat it. According to researcher, Gotu Kola has amazing healing properties such as:

  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Neuroprotective
  • Cognitive enhancer/Nootropic
  • Supports cardiovascular & respiratory health
  • Improves circulation
  • Promotes wound healing
  • Adaptogenic
  • Boosts immunity
  • Anti-rheumatic
  • Antimicrobial
  • Anti-psoriatic
  • Anxiolytic
  • Anticonvulsant
  • Gastroprotective
  • Improves digestion
  • Antihypertensive
  • Antihyperlgycemic
  • Good for the skin and hair
  • Increases libido
  • Reduces cancer risk

In Ayurveda, Gotu Kola is known to be as Blood Purifier and also as Memory Enhancer. Taking tea from the leaves of Gotu Kola could relieve Anxiety, Depression and Stress.

Family Medicine

I ask our graduates how do they encounter Hilot in their life. And here is how Gerone (who is a Yoga Teacher in France that was born and raised in Davao) experience Hilot.

From hearing Gerone’s story, we realize that indeed Hilot is an act of showing our love to our Family members first. It was our lolo, lola, Auntie, Uncle, Nanay or Tatay who give hilot to us when we are sick. The act of Healing comes first to the Family and this makes hilot to be our first Family Medicine.

Sacred Modality of Healing

In Hilot Academy we don’t just share our knowledge with our students but we also learn as we interact personally with each one of our potential Manghihilot. Indeed that Hilot is the Philippine Traditional Medicine, but our Medicine is not solely exclusive for the Filipino. It also welcome other people of different color, language, ethnicity and race. Hilot is an inclusive modality where anyone can experience from it. And through experience people learn the ancient science and art of Hilot. Before starting to learn the techniques of Hilot, it is important that the individual experience it first so that they may understand well the awesome wonders of this modality and how it will help people improve their lives.

Since Hilot deals with the Life Force with every individual, throughout the ages people thought that Hilot involved Spirituality. Indeed that Hilot is the gift of the Divine to Humanity, so it is appropriate for the practitioner to give credit to the Diwata or Divinity that gave Hilot to the world. There are some people who will neglect this part on giving Hilot but when they do it will not become Hilot anymore. It will just be like any ordinary massage where you can have in Spa or Massage Center.

The Teachings of Hilot requires Discipline as it teach each individual practitioner to provide Hope and Happiness, Inspiration, Love, Optimism and Trust. With these virtues that Hilot shares to the world, one must also build up relationship to the Ancient Filipino God who teach Hilot to our Ancestors. It is through the Divine Providence of the Diwata that the Sacred Science and Art of Hilot has been preserved through the colonization.

During the Sharing Time with our French Students weeks ago, i have realized that we as Filipino are blessed enough that even we undergo through colonization we have managed to preserved our identity and have brought Hilot to the modern world.  As i meditate on this realization, i found out that our Love for our Ancestors made Hilot to survive the force of colonization and change in our country. It is also through our resistance, our Ancestors have fought for our Freedom and liberation. Hilot have survived as it has been passed by our ancestors to their children. It has not been taught academically but through practical application or actual giving of hilot to treat illness that it have come into our present time.

Now-a-days the Medicine of Hilot is struggling again with the rise of Modern Medicine and Commercialism. The new world adopts Hilot and have brought wrong information to the world that Hilot is the Filipino Massage whereas Massage is just one of the many modality that Hilot does. Commercialism breaks down Hilot and disregard the Spirituality of Hilot. Educational Institution standardize the practice of Hilot and it was categorized under Massage because it can be a great source of income opportunity. Whereas in fact Massage Industry in the whole world is already suffering with the infection of prostitution in its practice as some practitioners have entered the personal zone of limitation and also have disregard the barriers of professionalism and personal ambitions.

In Hilot Academy of Binabaylan, we will strive to make and maintain Hilot as a Sacred Modality of Healing. We are making Hilot to become an opportunity for the individual to get to know themselves and connect them through Hilot to their creator. Through hilot the each individual mind, body and spirit will be harmonized as one that will help them to achieve their ultimate purpose in life.

As Manhihilot, you will take the role of a Priest to the old Filipino God which is the Diwata. Through the manghihilot, you will become a medium between the individual to his/ her higher selves and their ancestors. You will also mediate for the persons to the nature spirits and obtain their blessings of Wellness through their healings herbs and fruits. As manghihilot, you do not just heal the body but also you heal the environment where the individual lives.
