Init at Liwanag (Heat and Light)

During our Hilot Pahid workshop, we have defined Hilot healing modality as with the use of Halaman (herbs), Init (heat), Liwanag (light), Oras / Orasyon ( Time/ Prayer or therapeutic Communication) and Tubig (Water).

From these acronyms of the healing modality that hilot employed, one participant have asked what is the difference between heat and light since light produces heat.

This is a good question to answer though some may think that light produces heat, this two forms of energy has different vibration and affects two different senses. The light affects our sense of sight while the heat affects our sense of touch.

The light affects our eyes, liver, stomach, digestive system, urinary and reproductive organs; while the heat affects the integumentary system, lungs, heart and the nervous system.

Patient not Client

Lakay ALsent Magbaya demonstrate that our hands emits energy in a form of heat. If we focus on our natural energy within our body we can direct it outward to affect change.

Since energy follows thought, individual willingness to affect change can be brought up. Discipline of regular exercise and practice will bring out perfection to the desired results from your practice.

As Manghihilot, we use our hands to work healing to our patient; and our hands serve as an extension of our heart which symbolizes love and compassion. In the work we do as Manghihilot, we consecrate the energies we emit through our hands with love and compassion; and through our willingness to share this subtle energy that flows through us- healing is achieved.

We call our recipient of Hilot as Patient in contrary to the prohibition by the authority of the government agencies. We treat our patient with a goal of making them better, and calling them as client only means that we are just doing business with the people who seek healing.

People who seeks healing is called patient.

People who seeks benefit is called Client.

As Hilot we do not just provide benefit to the people, but we provide healing to all who seeks for it.

Life Force Central

Stomach area is in the middle of our heart and sex organs. When this two part of our body work well it gives life force to the stomach to be the new house of life until it comes out as a new human.

Taking care of our stomach make us balance and hilot guides the life force in this part to be distributed to each part of the body.

When a new baby comes out from mothers womb, after cleaning up the instict is to place to baby on mothers breast to be feed with mothers love and nutrients.

Ancient Medicine of the Filipino

The Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs are 127 human and animal figures engraved on the rockwall probably carved during the late Neolithic, or before 2000 BC. The engravings are mostly symbolic representations and are associated with healing and sympathetic magic.
Researchers have argued that the figures were medicinal and religious in function as they were made by ancestors to transfer the sickness of a child onto the limestone wall, thus, curing the child from ailments.

From ancient method of healing as described in the above mentioned article that can be found in Wikipedia, the Art of Ritual Tawas has the same function aside from diagnosing the cause of illness but at the same time absorbing the negative energies and illness of the person into the medium that been used.

Gift of Healing from the Barter Trade

The tradition of Hilot was known as no money involved until a superstition was created that when a manghihilot charge money for the services s/he redered his or her power of healing will get lost. So instead of money, manghihilot only recieves gifts or goods for the services s/he rendered. This thinking makes all manghihilot to become financially unstable.

But this is not true at all. The service of manghihilot has a fee. Monetary system arrived in the Philippines during the colonial rule of Spain and been improved by the Americans that we have now the monetary currency that we use today.

In ancient time we practice bartering or trading services or goods with another person when there is no money involved. It is a practice of exchange of a service or goods for other services and goods in return. Thus in modern times most healer prefer to call their professional service fee as an Energy Exchange.

As Manghihilot living in this modern world, we are also governed by the mundane needs like other people have in the society. We use money to buy food and drinks, pay our bills and rents, pay our fare when we travel and in sending our children to schools.

Yes our Knowledge in Hilot is a Divine Gift. A gift of life that we could use to live. A form of work to earn a living and not a means to add to us the burden of other people lives.

Our work in Hilot is to preserve and maintain life. And through our work we have improve the way you live by removing the obstacles and limitations on how you are living. And with that the cost of your comfort is worth paying for.

Another topic that i would like to share here with you is about Bentusa Fire Cupping Therapy.

Many times i’ve been asked if Bentusa is a Filipino Healing Modality. And during our forum, some people want to remove it because its not authentically Pinoy.

Chinese, Hindu, Arabs amd Greeks have bentusa as their healing modality so how come that it becomes Filipino.

Bentusa becomes part of Filipino Traditional Healing Modality because of the barter trade. Our fellow manghihilot ms. Kning Parungao have termed it as Panuot. In some provinces they use carabao horn to in suction. And there are also some practices in the Philippines that specialize in sucking venom that been bitten by poisonous snake or other animals that is called Mananandok or Mananawak which is far more traditional than the use of cup or bentusa glass.

Since time immemorial, China has a strong tie with the Philipines through barter trade so as India which had influence over the south east asia during the 300 to 600 AD.

When you bought something to other person, that object you have baught becomes yours and through bartering, bentusa becomes part of our Traditional and Natural Healing Arts.

Hilot is now in New York

It was a quick notice from an Am Pinay who was born in Bantayan City, Cebu, Philippines who have seen our website and booked a one-on-one workshop in Hilot Pahid; and i am so proud to introduce to everyone our newest member in the family of Hilot Academy.

Her name is Khokhoi who is a performing artist researcher on Philippine Culture and arts. She already have a background on natural healing and she choose to learn our very own native and tradional healing arts and science of Hilot.

We started our lesson by telling her story about the Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs which is dated back from neolithic age or around 2000 BC which shows a wall curving of stick images of man that according to researcher is believed to be the earliest method of healing. By curving the images of the patient on the cave wall, it is believed that the illness of the patient will be transfered to the limestone and the patient will be healed. After telling this story, we have demonstrated the art of Tawas Diagnosis which may relate to the principles of the petroglyphs.

Then after we perform tawas, khokhoi experience the hilot pahid and after an hour of treatment she fell asleep. Khokhoi have been relaxed and relieved her tension from the jetlog she had from travelling long hours. Her body recieved adjustment and restore her bodily function. Then i demonstrate the 5 elemental manipulative strokes as she do it in return.

As she completed the demonstration, i introduce her to ms. Grace Sanico of Lunas ay Hilot sa Kalusugan and I Steps Inc.

Amd through Ms. Grace we award her certificate and welcome her as newest member of the Academy.

Then on our last hour, we have shared some knowledge of herbal hilot and introduce to her some local herbs that are available in the garden.

Take Hilot as a Whole and not by Parts

In taking Hilot as part of reclaiming of our National Identity must not conform to the modern standards of society. Hilot is our own Traditional and Natural Medicine that has own diagnostic and treatment method.

Our Government is spending money in making research to revive the Hilot as Philippines Traditional and Complementary Medicine but if their focus is just on reclaiming Hilot as a form of Massage, then it is a waste of time and money.

If the Core group is focusing on Hilot as Massage, then let all hilot masahista be regulated by DoH CEMT and be licensed professional. But Hilot research must also include the traditional diagnostic method which is Tawas.

In 2009 as i remember, there is a Party List representative in Quezon City who sponsor the study of Hilot Wellness Massage that merge the study of Hilot Massage into Swedish Massage. Her reason why she make this learning program aside from the employablity reason also she want to make it more scientific and less superstitious and animistic.

In our forum, it always said that people reject the use and practice of Tawas because it is a Pagan Culture and most Filipino are Christians.

It is true that modern Filipino are now Christians, but Hilot is not a Christian modality. Hilot is a healing modality that been taught by the Babaylan to the People; and the Babaylan are the Priest of the Diwata and Anito who are the ancient God of the Filipino people which predates Christianity and Islam.

Through this sacred science and art of Healing that been taught to us by the Babaylan, our present generation exist. But through colonialism, our own identity as a nation have been poisoned and become westernized.

Now we have come to an age of decolonization as a form of detoxifying our cultural identity and rebooting our selves again according to our very own setting (like an android or smart phone reboot into factory setting), we have to accept all and not just part.

If you only reclaim Hilot in a form of Massage, then you are a Massage Therapist and not Hilot.

Manghihilot Festival

Healing Festival is already an existing project of the Local Government of Siquijor as the province was known to be an Island of Magick and Healing.

Great healers can be found in this province and sad to say government agencies doesnt give any support from them except to the DILG, DTI and Department of Tourism.

People around the world travel by air, land and seas to witness and experience the healing wonders of the Filipino that are concentrated in Siquijor Islands; that every Holy Week local healers found their own pride and identity as Filipino Healer.

But great Healers in the Philippines are not all can be found in Siquijor. They are scattered all around the Philippines. And we in the academy have been blessed to participate on the annual event in Siquijor.

This year, on October 28 you do not need to go to Siquijor just to become part of this Annual Healing Festival. We are making Manghihilot Festival to be part of municipality, city and provinces as part of our cultural heritage and tourism industry.

Join us and be part of our Manghihilot Pride in reclaiming back our Identity as Hilot.

Hilot sa Hapag

Our behaviour change and so does our mind does’nt work well when we are Hungry. Filipino culture values food as source of life that makes food a valuable industry in the money market.

As our body respond to hunger by changing our attitude and behavior so does food also can change our attitude and behaviour by influencing our internal organs to function.

This is the reason why our parents prepare meal in the table for us to eat. Even when we are sick, we are encourage to eat so that we regain our strength.

In Hilot, we also use food to channel healing powers that will restore the individual health and wellness.
