The Goal of Hilot Massage

Everyone think that Hilot is Massage that is similar to Swedish Massage but unfortunately Hilot is not just a Massage. Massage is only one treatment modality that a Hilot could provide aside from Herbal Treatment, Bio Energetic Medicine, Spiritual Healing and counselling sessionHilot can treat not only the Physical ailments but also the emotional, mental and spiritual condition of an individual.

In focusing this article to the concept of Hilot Massage; in the Philippines we call Massage as Masahe and not Hilot. The Goal of Massage in Hilot is to promote healing, to alleviate pain and discomfort, to hasten recovery, to initiate relaxation and to improve the well being of the client/patient.

So how do Hilot do that?

In promoting healing, the Hilot need to determine first the cause of illness in order to provide healing. Hilot conduct a thorough investigation using the art of TAWAS or diagnosis. The Hilot also employ pulse reading, hilot pasalat at pakapa to determine which part of the body that has ailment.

Upon determining the body part that has pain, the Hilot now will apply herbal oil/ liniment to rub the body part that is affected with pain to relief discomfort. But again, in applying herbs is not limited on massage or rubbing the superficial part of the body, it depends on the condition of the patient so if massage is contraindicated Hilot can apply herbal poultice instead and wrap the herbs on the body part that is affected with banana leaf or other appropriate herbs

By applying special medicinal herbs recovery will be hasten; and giving massage to the patient will induce sleep that will relax the patient that will lead to the improvement of well being.

The Healing Fire

Since the time we discover the use of fire; this sacred element become a friend to mankind. Aside from the light that it radiates during the dark times it also provides warmth to the body to restore body heat in times of illness.

Hearing our inner selves

Today we had a great time discussing our cultural healing arts as we perform Kilubansa Healing through pagpag and patong dampi ritual. Then we have discussed the 7ancestral powers and the 8 directions of the ancestors where an individual can strengthen their bond to their divine lineage.

In Hilot, communication is essential in providing the right treatment to our client thus we perform tawas spiritual diagnosis in determining the cause of illness whether it be physical, emotional, mental, social or spiritual cause.

We also have performed pulse reading as a means of communicating with our internal organs as our inner selves.

Hilot is not Swedish Massage

haplos effluerage Last night, i had a conversation with a Massage Enthusiast over Facebook Messenger. In our conversation she have mentioned that at last she have found the Filipino Version of Swedish Massage through Hilot. She have said that because she saw in one of our video posted at Hilot Academy FB Page that we mention Hilot Haplos as equivalent to Effluerage of Swedish Massage.

Indeed we have mention it to our video that Hilot Haplos is equivalent to Effluerage of Swedish Massage, but it does not mean that Hilot is only limited to Massage. I have told our friend the difference of learning through online videos to live discussion. Because Learning through Videos are limited only to the task performed than on live in person learning we explain thoroughly the principles behind the techniques that been demonstrated. It is also important to learn the whole concept first before jumping into conclusion that Hilot is the Filipino version of Swedish Massage which i will insist that it is not.

If we are going to talk about Massage in Filipino, Massage is not called Hilot but it was called as Masahe; and Masahe is only one of the many Healing Modality of Hilot.

To justify the thinking of Hilot as a form of Massage, the practitioner must recognise the difference of the Hilot Masahe strokes to the 5 manipulative strokes of Swedish Massage.
