Tolerating Emotional Pain

Pain is usually indicates the presence of an illness to a person. But be reminded that it is just only one of the many signs of illnesses that we need to verify. Usually, Heartache is also a sign of illness whether it comes from Physical illness or emotional illness. But most of Filipino do endure Physical and Emotional pain.

I remember my teacher at School of Alternative Medicine have taught us, Dr. Reuben M. Galang Jr., that anything that give us limitation is a sign of an illness. But that statement is very wide to understand. But in terms of the capacity of an individual to exercise life such as movement and actions of the Physical body, that is where we are directed to look out for limitations. That is why we are taught to assess Physical Body Range of Motion. But in my personal practice of Filipino Indigenous Traditional Medicine, the limitation in exercising and enjoying life does not only be seen in Physical Body but also in their mental and emotional body. Though, we observed that many Filipino have High Tolerance in Pain that they can endure the situations they have just to obtain what they want to achieve in their life. And that is enduring Physical Pain. They wont stop unless they will fall down and not able to stand up again.

Sometimes, in their life they will just ignore emotional and mental pain or illness. What matter’s to them is to have a means how to earn money to buy for their food and support their family. But what they did not realize is, this kind of tolerance of having emotional pain due to betrayal of ones partner affects how they interact with other people and how they work. Keeping the past painful memories like betrayal makes it a negative energies or as old pinoy would say as evil spirits that make them suffer by having usog, bati or even kulam. Even though, this person have claimed that he was healed before by a magtatawas, there is still residue of negative energies that make him bounded in a chain of past memories that inflict him that also affects the lives of his children.

Mental and Emotional Illness is hard to deal if the person is not willing to be freed from the chain of negative memories. This person needs to be cleansed not only in its physical aspect but also in his mental and emotional state that may improve his social aspects in life.

What will we do, if family members refuse treatment for their patient?

It was our usual day on May 18, 2024 when a Young Man ask me to a Hilot Treatment for his Father. And I said yes and apply our policy to let the patient come here as we provide donation based hilot treatment. And to my surprise, the young man brought his father on a wheel chair that could not walk on his own because he had stroke last November 2023.

I assess the situation of the man whose name is Kuya Eddie and found hope that he could be recovered soon. The first thing i do is test kuya Eddie’s sensitivity. next is mobility which i find that his joint were stocked or seems locked up. I also checked on his strength and found it limited and lastly endurance which if i will give percentage, he only have 20-30 %. He complains that he lacks balance and pray that he could stand and walk and do the normal things he does. Unlike other stroke patients, his speech does not have any defects. He could speak well and even have tell me elaborately to what had happened. His memory is clear, though emotionally he is suffering from depression and anxiety. I also learned that he is just my neighbor who lives on the next door. So in his case, I disregard our policy that I my self have come to their house.

I also made it clear to them that they should not worry much in terms of making payment or donation. So, when I do treatment Kuya Eddie’s son is watching and assisting me in doing Hilot. The first day was successful but at the end of the treatment session I sense problem which is called Utang na Loob. The son is shy because he is worried that he could not pay my treatment services for his father. To be honest, I do not make my patient to sign waiver, specially if they are living around the community because they are just our neighbor and we apply the term pakikisama and pakikiapagkapwa. I feel that they are just an extended family to me which I already know their background in terms of finances and life style. So, I gave them my assurance that no single cent will come out of their pocket in the service that I provide to Kuya Eddie.

But on the next day which is our 3rd session, the son was not around and only Kuya Eddie is lying on his bed. At least one of his relative was there that my presence was known in the compound where kuya Eddie lives and know that I will give treatment to Kuya Eddie. So, I finish my 3rd treatment session with him and went back home to the Shrine. Then after a while as I am drinking coffee and having a Chat with Lakay, there was a woman calling for us and looking for the Manghihilot who treats kuya eddie. And I answer her that I am. and I ask back who she was, and she said that she is the Ex Wife of Kuya Eddie. And I ask her what happened and what she wants. She told me that her son would like the treatment to stop as they do not have money to pay me. But I looked at her and saw her that her head was wrapped and has towel on her shoulder, I also asked her what happened to her and she said that she is having a hair treatment on a Salon. In my mind, she have money to spent for her beautification, but she does not have money to sent her ex husband to a proper medical care and she is even the one to ask me to stop treatment to her ex husband.

I really feel so bad though she claim that she is already separated to her husband but as I know there is no Divorce here and only annulment, but in their condition or economic situation, I know that they are not annulled so technically by papers and legality, they are still husband and wife. So, what i feel here is that when you are sick and incapacitated such as stroke and were not able to stand and move by your self, you loose your rights to choose and to have a proper health care. I even hear the son say to me that her mother decides to send her ex husband for a medical check up whenever kuya Eddie is already able to walk again. This breaks my heart and explode my eyes in tears. This situation adds up to my heart break that I had many male patients that had stroke that been left by their wives and family. What happen to love when they first met and also the cause for them to have children? Is it okay to neglect the Father and only honor the mother? This hurts me so much. And I do not have words to describe how hurt I am with the situation that I am encountering with. I feel that I am powerless, that I can only heal the sick person but healing the brokenness of the family is difficult to reset.

I think that this post is just a rant but I hope this can be an eye opener to everyone. We still do not know what lies ahead of us. But through our current action, I believe we can predict what will happen tomorrow and on the following days. If I stop helping Kuya Eddie, he might loose his life. But If I continue to help him, I know by the end of this year he could walk again and restore back what he loose in the past, Kuya Eddie still has the power of choice, unless he is the one who refuse my treatment then I have no power against his own will.

Birthing a New Healing Modality from a Different People

From 2018 I keep hearing of a word that they call as Hilot Lagatok which they claim to be part of Hilot Modality that cracks and pop bones where they derive the word lagatok as it has sound of popping. In massage therapy or Swedish Massage there is a manipulative stroke that is called tapotement which is a rapid and repeated striking of the side of the palms or cupped palm on the fleshy and muscular area of the body. It is performed to increase the blood circulation in local areas as it warms and soften muscles. It also tap off mucus that sticks on the walls of our lungs or also been used as technique when someone has been choked to remove foreign objects that obstruct passage of the air flow thus improve breathing.

Though this group of people are from Filipino Bone Setter Inc. They don’t do massage but instead they do pop and crack joints in all body parts as they claim to align the misaligned joint. Upon evaluating and assessing them, what they do is Chiropractic Manipulation but do insist that they are bone setter. From the definition that been formulated to describe the works of Modern Filipino Bone Setter, they have said that:

Modern Filipino Bone Setting is an alternative health care practices that focus on treating misaligned joints and other Musculoskeletal ailments through the conduct of Physical assessment and evaluation, muscle preparation, joint mobilization and joint alignment in providing relief from pain, weakness,
numbness and reducing nerve compression, relief from muscle tension and promote natural healing by restoring proper alignment and functions to the spine and joints. Filipino Bone Setter Inc,

Whereas, the scope of practice of Traditional Bone Setter includes:

  1. Joint Manipulation
  2. Reducing Joint Dislocation
  3. Reset Fractured Bones
  4. and treat MuskuloSkeletal Injuries

But upon our initial interview with their President Mr. Gary O. Trinidad on which the members call him Master, they do not take the resetting fractured bones but instead refer patients to Medical Professionals. Indeed that they loose one point of becoming on being a Traditional Bone Setter (which I am glad that this work of setting Fractured Bones remain on the scope of duties and responsibilities to the Authentic Manghihilot on which in Ifugao they call as Mun’apyuh was still revered by the Indigenous People and even with the Christians convert.)

In order to extract the health benefits of Bone Setting, I asked Filipino Bone Setters members that is present at the moment yesterday May 15, 2024 to what case of illnesses that have positive response on their treatment. The participant on this Assessment and Evaluation are Mr. Gary Trinidad, Mr. Rommel Reyes, Mr. Disler Vingco and Ms. Raquel Juacalla. According to them:

Bone Setting may provide beneficial effects to the person by improving body posture, improving range of motion and other health related problems such as:
✓ Injuries Issues (Tendonisis, Tennis Elbow)
✓ Reducing Arthritic Pain
✓ Scoliosis
✓ Muscle Spasm
✓ Vertigo
✓ Migraine
✓ Sciatica
✓ Frozen Shoulder
✓ Metabolic Function (Gain & Loss Weight)
✓ Infertility
✓ Misalignment
✓ Dislocation

We also have help them formulate their own code of ethics to follow which is very important part for them to be recognized and accredited by the government accreditation body; which they have formed the following:

  1. . Filipino Bone Setters take pride on our knowledge and skills on the effectiveness of the Treatment method we apply on addressing issues on musculoskeletal injuries, joint misalignment, improving body postures and range of motion.
  2. Filipino Bone Setter prioritize the well being of our Patients. Our primary goal is to alleviate pain, promote healing and restore function.
  3. We approach each patient cases with compassion and empathy, considering the patient’s overall health and wellbeing.
  4. As Filipino Bone Setter, we respect patients’ confidentiality. We do not disclose personal information about our patient without consent.
  5. We maintain professional relationship with client/patients and avoid gossip or sharing sensitive details.
  6. While formal informed consent may not be obtained in the same way as in modern medicine, bone setters typically explain their treatment methods to patients or their families.
  7. Patients are informed about the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of the treatment.
  8. Consent is implied when patients seek their services voluntarily.
  9. Bone Setters provide honest assessments of the injury and the expected outcomes
    of the treatment.
  10. We do not promise miraculous results but emphasize the importance of following
    the instructions for optimal healing.
  11. As Bone Setters we recognize our own limitations, only if the cases we handle are
beyond our expertise or required specialized care that we refer our client/patient to
    appropriate healthcare professionals.
  12. We collaborate with other healers, such as Hilot and other alternative, traditional
and complementary Health Care providers to address various aspects of health.
  13. Bone Setters learn from experience and continuously refine our techniques through
    our continuing Education program.
  14. We seek guidance from elders and attend gatherings where knowledge is shared.

And the most important part of this birthing process that we do for them is that we were able to describe elaborately their bone setting techniques which they can present for their Government Recognition and Accreditation application.

Through this I feel proud of my self, that we were able to help them to exist and not hide on the guise of Hilot which endanger our Manghihilot practitioners of have lack of opportunity and be banned again in practicing our Indigenous Traditional Healing Method.

From August 19 to the last day of my US Visit, I am going to offer my services which is the KGP or Katutubong Gamutang Pilipino ( Traditional Indigenous Filipino Medicine) such as the Tawas Spiritual Diagnostic, Pagpag Pauli (Soul Retrieval) Kulubansa Elemental Name Energetic Balance Analysis, and Hilot Binabaylan Healing Ritual.

The existence of Filipino Indigenous Traditional Healing

The existence of Indigenous Traditional Healing dates back from 1400 BC or beyond in the Archipelago that we know now as the Philippines. This is in accordance to Asia Pacific Journal of Multidisciplinary Research on which they focus on Cebuano Traditional Healing Arts and Science.

It is said that the Healing Practices of Cebuano are known as Panambal and its practitioners are called Mananambal. And the modalities of healing of the mananambal includes: Himulso or pulse checking, Palakaw or petition, Pasubay (determining the cause of illness and its possible cure. which now we know as Tawas), Pangalap or searching for medicinal herbs that will be used in healing, Palina or Fumigation, Tayhop or gentle blowing, Tutho or saliva blowing, Tuob Boiling or Steam bath, Orasyon or mystical prayers, Hilot or massage and Barang or Sorcery.

These are the Traditional Healing Modalities that a Mananambal employ in their treatment practices, which Hilot Academy of Binabaylan aims to preserve and promote in this present Generation. You will learn this practices as you study with us through our Hilot Binabaylan Training here at Hilot Academy of Binabaylan.

Meeting with Filipino Bone Setters Inc.

Yesterday April 24,2024-me and Lakay went to Rotary Club District 3780 at Quezon City to meet with the Filipino Bone Setters Inc. 2 of its Board of Directors which is Mr. Gary O. Trinidad and Ms. Ailyn Mea P. Bactol asking me if our Training Program is accredited by PITAHC or Philippine Institute of Traditional Alternative Health Care which is an attach agency of the Philippine Department of Health, which obviously I answer yes as we are the one who made Curriculum for Hilot Philippines Development Center with the Former Secretary of Health, Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan through the initiative the former Secretary of Tourism, Dr. Mina Gabor.

We have worked together since the time of Pandemic on 2020 and finally, we have completed our work with her in establishing Hilot Philippines Development Center upon receiving the Certificate of Accreditation and recognized as the very first Hilot School accredited by PITAHC. Though the accreditation process was a long Journey as PITAHC is just new in doing this for Hilot as it requires more work compared to other Traditional Medicine Modality such as on Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Homeopathy and Naturopathy as foreign countries already have standards for accreditation which I think they just applied it in our Country; whereas on the Modality of Hilot, they still have no Idea not until we came in and guide them on the process just only to have the Accreditation for HPDC.

My experience of being a Former TESDA (Technical Education Skills Development Authority)) Accredited & Certified Trainer and Assessor on Hilot Wellness & Massage Therapy have helped me how to create a Curriculum based on the Standards ask by a Governing Agency which I am very grateful that I still carry the knowledge that I acquired from TESDA and become very useful in terms of creating Training programs independently for Hilot Academy of Binabaylan which is an Educational Ministry/Seminary of Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. in reviving and promoting Philippine Indigenous Traditional Healing Arts and Science which is popularly known as Hilot.

In Barangay: The 16th Century Philippine Culture and Society written by William Henry Scott on Page 118 that we have 5 general category in treating a Disease, and they are:

  1. Massage which was applied for injured or dislocated muscles or applying pressures to nerve centers
  2. Fumigating or sweating
  3. prescription of herbal medicine
  4. Counter Sorcery
  5. and propitiation of supernatural beings.

With these 5 categories of Treatment, we may see the kind of disease people had during the 16th century which are on the first three treatment modality, it deals with the Physical Illness and the last 2 are Spiritual Illness or Disease. William Henry Scott also mentions about the Mamarukpok which is a masseur that pummeled the back along the area of the spine, which we know now as Bone Setter.

Our History have included the work of Mamarukpok or Bone Setter or now in the 21st century is known as Lagatok as part of the treatment modalities employed by our Ancestors but in this present time is not recognized and included on the Standards and Regulation on the Practice of Hilot by TESDA or even PITAHC-DoH. At this time, this modality of pummeling the back and spine is under the modality of Chiropractic which was developed on September 18, 1895 by Daniel David Palmer at Davenport, Iowa, USA. and on 1990, the first Chiropractic Clinic was established in Metro Manila which is the United Nations Chiropractic Center.

By that time, Bone Setting is considered as Folk Medicine together with Hilot but on 2008, Hilot has been given recognition by TESDA as they see it as employable skills that they created a Training Standard and Curriculum on Hilot as a Wellness Massage on August 29, 2008. under TESDA Board Resolution no. 2008-19 with Qualification code HHCHL208. (I am writing the details here so that, I may not forget).

Though at Philippine Statistic Office in their website we can find the Philippine Standards of Occupation Classification 2012, and there we can find the occupation of Traditional and Complementary Medicine Associate Professionals with Occupational Code Number 3230 which described as:

Traditional and complementary medicine associate professionals prevent, care for and treat human physical and mental illnesses, disorders and injuries using herbal and other therapies based on theories, beliefs and experiences originating in specific cultures.

Their tasks include:

Examples of occupations classified here:

  • Drugless treatment healer
  • Bonesetter
  • Faith healer
  • “Healer of indigenous people (e.g. Mansi-bok (Ibaloi); Mansip-ok (Kankana-ey) in Cordilleras)”
  • Herbalist
  • Scraping and cupping therapist
  • Village healer
  • Witch doctor

Some related occupation classified elsewhere:

Chiropractor – 3259
Homeopath – 2230
Hydrotherapist – 3255
Naturopath – 2230
Osteopath – 3259
Traditional midwife – 3222

Though here, we cannot see at PSOC the name Hilot, but our work can be classified as Indigenous Healer, Village Healer, Herbalist and Witch Doctor. Maybe soon, you will be surprised that Philippine Schools will offer a course on being a Witch Doctor! 😛 Unfortunately, PITAHC and TESDA does not recognize the practice of Bone Setting as part of Hilot Practice even Historically it is part of Hilot Modality.

But now as of this writing, I have hope for Filipino Bone Setter Inc. and the practice of Bone Setting in the Philippines can be recognize by the government accrediting body. As the FBS seeks to be regulated for the safety of their patients. But the problem is both Tesda and Pitahc won’t accept their practice as part of Hilot but instead referred them to Chiropractic modality. And to be honest, when I saw them conducting their training, the model is near to the Chiropractic practice. Their teachings were heavily scientific and modern, which is good though I have not heard any indigenous and traditional concept from them except that they desire to preserve the identity of healing modality aligned to our Philippine Culture and Tradition. And also the fact that there are many Bone Setter who call them self as Hilot Lagatok in Social Media that is not licensed and Certified that may bring dishonor to the practice of Hilot.

So as lead advocate of Hilot in the Philippines, I am standing up to help the Filipino Bone Setters Inc. so that they may have their own recognition and be regulated by our government accrediting body for the safety of patients and avoid confusion in terms of the Healing Modality. Though as Hilot Binabaylan, I desire to reclaim back the practice of Mamarukpok or Hilot Lagatok that has been separated to us together with Hilot Paanak or Traditional Birth Attendant that has an occupational code of 3222 acording to this website. https://psa.gov.ph/classification/psoc/unit

So last night, I Assess and evaluated them to confirm their bone setting practice as I ask them the following questions which pertains to the practice of Traditional Bone Setter.

  1. in accordance to Philippine Culture and Society on 16th Century, the Mamarukpok or Bone Setter of that time do pummel the back and Spine.
  2. Bone Setter are expected to do Joint Manipulation.
  3. Reducing Joint Dislocation
  4. Reset Bone Fracture
  5. and treat Musculo Skeletal Injuries

Out of 5 questions, they said no to the most important one of the work of Bone Setter which is resetting bone fracture which is quite understandable these days as indeed it requires more of medical attention rather than of primary healthcare. Though this could be work out if we can develop competency that may boost their confidence in performing the task, I believe they could do that as Traditional Bone Setter of Ifugao that is still known up to this date as Mun’apyuh do it.

With that, I drafted for them a Sample Standard that they may use for to update their Curriculum.

Course Title: The Practice of Filipino Bone Setter

Objectives:

  1. To define the practice of Bone Setting in the Philippines and its history and scope of practice.
  2. To Identify the Health Benefits of Bone setting and its contraindications.
  3. To apply the practical knowledge of Human Anatomy and Pathophysiology in the Practice of Bone Setting.
  4. To Formulate Code of Ethics/conducts on the Practice of Bone Setting in accordance to its Principles and Philosophy.
  5. To create a therapeutic environment for the Bone Setting Practice & Treatment Session
  6. To observe the Bone setting Diagnostic procedures prior to the treatment session,
  7. To conduct pre conditioning warm up to patients prior to the Bone Setting Treatment.
  8. To apply Bone Setting Treatment Manipulation Techniques to patients.
  9. To conduct post treatment assessment feedback
  10. To provide supplementary/self-care treatment for continues improvement of Bone Setting Patients at home.

And through these, Hilot Academy of Binabaylan is looking forward to work collaboratively with Filipino Bone Setters Inc. in reviving our Very own Ancestral Healing Arts and Science. As we bring back practice of Bone Setting in the Philippines to Hilot, I pray that soon we could also bring back the practice of Hilot Paanak or Traditional Birth Attendant to Hilot once more and maintain it firmly into our hands.

Hilot as shared culture among our International Neighbors

Amazingly that Tawas sa Papel and Tawas sa Kandila and Even Tawas sa Itlog shares our Culture Internationally. These methods of Pagtatawas or Divination has been long practiced by our nearest Ancestors, but looking into the world Community, Tawas sa Papel is called Capnomancy or Libanomancy which was first recorded used was in Babylonia. So as the Melted Candle Wax Divination that is known as Carromancy used by the Greeks. Though we assume that we obtain these practices of Divination through Trading activities that may date back by 2nd millennium BC to 9 AD.

We could not dismiss the fact that our native healers (which mostly unschooled and no formal education) have employed this knowledge and have pass it down to us in this present Generation that becomes part of our Healing Tradition.

And through Hilot Academy of Binabaylan, we are lifting it up by employing Science and Art to the practice of Pagtatawas. As we continue this effort, soon the Philippine Indigenous Traditional Healing Arts and Science of Hilot will have the same recognition just like how the Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners being called as Doctors.

Our first responder during the Time of Pandemic now becomes an Ordained Binabaylan through Hilot Daloy Course!

When the Pandemic of Covid 19 started and the world was in a lockdown, i thought that our activities in Hilot Academy of Binabaylan would end as in person interaction was prohibited in order to prevent the spread of Covid 19. Even accepting patient for Hilot was restricted at that time which made us to have no means of generating income that will pay our bills in maintaining our Shrine so as our Daily Living. Our Last in person students at that time was Kai Bautista from Glendale, California; Kara and Ice which host our class in their house at Tagaytay at the last days of February 2020. We were able to finish our class and have managed to visit our Mumbaki Friend in Brgy. Kinakin, Banaue, Ifugao which is Mamerto Tindongan courtesy of Maria Hashwell friend Archimedes Miranda De Leon who brought us there.

We had a great road trip going to Ifugao with Sir Archie as he tours us around from Tarlac going up to Northern Philippines to meet Mamerto and that was on March 10, 2020. I am grateful that Maria have introduced us to Sir Archie as we learned that he is a great grandson of the Philippine Founder of Union Espiritista Christiana de Filipinas, Inc. which was founded on the 19th day of February 1905. We were able to sleep over at Sir Archie residence which is part of the Temple Ground of Union Espiritista in Tarlac. Then early in the morning we travel way up north to meet Mamerto Tindongan which we stay another night before coming back to manila.

We have no Idea that as we went back to Bulacan that lockdown or Enhanced Community Quarantine will be implemented. People are prohibited to come out of their houses and only those who have quarantine pass could go out to the market, bank and other essential establishment. And from that moment, the Global Healing Devotion was made that participated by people from different part of the world.

From the Success of the Global Healing Devotion, I perceived the Idea of offering the Hilot Online Training of Non Contact Hilot Mind and Spirit Work which initiates Psycho Emotional Coach or Magaanito/ Pangutanahan/ Pangatauhan/ Magtatawas and Lukayo Faye Estrella was the very first responder who took the class which happen on June 1, 2020- August 30, 2020. And this year from August 5-11, 2024 Lukayo Finaly completed his training with us making him officially an Ordained Hilot Binabaylan.

Connecting the Gap towards optimum Health and Wellness

Hilot through times even from the moment of the first human being existed in our country, Hilot has been connecting lives on an individual to the source of life. And in this modern days where healthcare are expensive and sometimes discriminating, Hilot has become a refuge for our fellow Filipino who does not afford to avail the professional services of Medical personnel. This is why Hilot Academy of Binabaylan reaches out to all Filipino in Diaspora to become a Hilot Binabaylan in their area.

This coming August 2024, we will go to Danville Yoga and Wellness Center as we hold classes on Philippine Indigenous Ancestral Healing Arts and Science there on which we highlight our entry level class which is the Hilot Binabaylan Training.

As early as today, we already have 23 registrant that is willing to be initiated as Hilot Binabaylan that comes from different part of the United States of America.

Though what I am expecting is to reach out with our graduates to provide for them an opportunity to level up their practice and become a Mentor. I also see that there are some inquiry who wish to become a mentor, but i encourage them to become a Hilot Binabaylan Practitioner first for about a year and two so that they may be deeply grounded on the healing principle of Hilot before they can lead others on becoming a Hilot Binabaylan. Though as I see the graph in our registration form, i am surprised to see that we have doctors who are enrolling the class and many Masters degree holder who are willing to be initiated by us.

Just like the practice of Hilot Healing, our training will accept you whether you have no educational attainment or you had a wonderful degree out of the education you have. But what is important in our Training is your willingness to unlearn, relearn and be immersed on the Hilot Healing Principles which we will share on August as we come to the US.
