Common People Medicine

Last July 11 to 15, 2017 we have an opportunity once again to share the knowledge of Traditional Filipino Healing Arts to a FilAm that lives in Los Angeles, California, USA who is in pilgrimage that seeks to be re connected to her ancestral roots. This newly awaked soul is Verma Zapanta.

In her Instragram dated Juky 19, 2017, she wrote her experiemce with us that says:

” Last Friday, I finished a five day introductory course on the traditional Filipino healing practice of Hilot in Makati. Hilot is popularly known as massage, but it’s far more than that. (For folks that are Filipino, if an elder has ever given you an intense massage for a fever, pilay, or ailment; that’s hilot!) My teacher Apu Adman Aghama believes that Hilot is a Universal Gift of the Diwata to humanity to maintain optimum health and wellness. I was introduced to traditional and contemporary techniques for hilot, the historical context of the work and most importantly its spiritual essence. Apu also made connections the the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual elements of hilot.
Today, the Philippine government has made hilot the primary care modality in their healthcare system, which is great because it’s retaining our indigenous healing practice. However, they are standardizing its techniques making it appear like a style of massage to relax and fails to acknowledge hilot as a holistic form of healing. The healthcare system is also dismissive of a core aspect of hilot which is Tawas, the spiritual diagnosis of a patient. I learned that Tawas can help people to explore, confront and alleviate traumas that are carried in our bodies through things such as prayer or energy work.
Learning at their academy also served as a form of healing for me. I am so grateful for the intimate sessions and hope to expand on my knowledge of hilot in the future.

Salamat for your knowledge and warmth Apu Adman Aghama, your hospitality Kayoko Yamahata Comon, and for being my practice patient Lakay Magdaag Aghama. Thank you for the photos as well! Thank you Hilot Academy of Binabaylan! 🙏🏾 ”

And on same date se also have an entry that says:

“It’s amazing how healers can see into the most intimate parts of our past, present and future selves using everyday items. On this trip, I witnessed Babaylans take a person’s pulse or simply look them in the eyes to do a reading. At the Hilot Academy, I received my first tawas reading from Apu Adman Aghama and Lakay Magdaag Aghama using paper and an egg. I am so grateful for them facilitating a conversation between my ancestors and I. Their prayers filled me with hope and courage to continue on this very complex journey to self.”

Again, we congratulate Ms. Verma Zapanta for completing the Hilot ng Aghamang Binabaylan Training Course as we pray that these modality she now posses in her hands would open up doors that she may get in touch with her ancestral roots.

Trully Hilot is for everyone because as we have shared that Hilot is the Common People Medicine that been given to us by the Diwata.

As we have taught that the Diwata is our first healer in accordance to the Generations of Healers, that followed by the Babaylan who are the care takers of all creation, then the Albularyo or Herbalist, and Hilot who is a Physical Medicine Provider.

Kilubansa Healing

Kilubansa is the Filipino God of Healing. Though there are no written record about his origin, some sources only mention him as the Father of Dihas the Goddess of Medicinal Herbs.

In Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. we have worked out and revive the beliefs in the old Filipino Gods by making their presence known at this present time through working with their energies.

Since Hilot Academy pay patronage to Kilubansa, thus the healing method named after the God of Healing immerged.

If we look at the name of kilubansa, it is a complex word formed by combination of two independent root words.

First word is kilu which is a word refering to the measurement of weight; and the word Bansa which refers to a name of a country. But meditating on the Word Bansa, it is not only it refer to a Country but to the word Bansag which means name.

Thus Kilubansa Healing is a method of balancing elemental energy that can be found in the name of the person.

It is believed that our personal names carries the energy that the universe has given us and through our name we will determine also our life Purpose. In Kilubansa Healing, we can also determine through our names the elemental ingredients that we are made of.

The whole name of the person represent the Earth element, while the vowels represents the elements of air, fire and water.

History of Philippine Traditional Medicine

I am re writing a Comptency Based Learning Material for Hilot Wellness Massage NC II and i want to share it here the History and Development of Traditional Medicine in the Philippines.

This article is not a full details of History but a summary of what had happened in the past, that which i like most in TESDA training which focus more on Skills Development rather than in theoretical and philosopical knowledge.

So here is the first part of my CBLM:

 History of Traditional Filipino Medicine
Ancient Filipinos believes that all Life form comes from the Divine, thus maintaining life is the sacred duty of everyone. Since the Divine is the creator of mankind, it is also the Divine who is the first healer of its creation.
When the creation of the Divine had multiplied on the face of the world, the Divine tasked the human beings to be the caretaker of all of its creation; and the Babaylan, who was chosen among the people who has a special ability in communicating with the Divine and all of its creation becomes the Catalonan or mediator between man and the Divine. The Catalonans are the one who are at Peace with everyone thus he or she has the role of a healer who brings back peace to the lives of the People.
When the Spanish arrive in the Philippines, they brought Catholicism in the land and forcibly convert the locals to the modern religion; thus the Babaylan, Catalonans and Mumbakis of the old religion hide their beliefs and practices by adopting the new religion and their healing methods are synchronized into the Catholic Faith that bring forth to the Alburaryos and Spiritista who employs orasyon , herbs and touch manipulation massagein their healing arts. Catholic Faith demonizes the old beliefs and practices of the Babaylan, Catalonan and the mumbaki that makes the modern medicine popular to the Land.
On the revival of the Traditional Medicine in the Philippines on 1997, the Former President Fidel Valdez Ramos signed the Republic Act 8423 which is also known as the Traditional & Alternative Medicine Act of 1997 of which brought forth the standardization of the study of Hilot Wellness Massage as an employable skills that can generate income to the Health, Social and other Community Development services sector.

Hilot definition UPDATE

Hilot is the Ancient Healing Arts and Science of the Philippines. It is an Art because it is a skills acquired by study, experience and observation. While Hilot is also a Science because it is a knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truth or the operation of general laws specially obtained and tested through Scientific Method.

Hilot incorporates Herbs, Heat (Init), Light (liwanag), Therapeutic Communication/ Positive Affirmations (orasyon) and Water (tubig) in healing thus becoming a Holistic Integrative Life Changing Operable Therapy.

Do Hilot absorbs negative energies of the Client?

A question been asked to me by a client after our Binabaylan Hilot Session, and her question is that do Hilot absorb negative energy from the client? And my response is No we do not absorb negative energy but we transform the negative energy into a positive energy.

I believe as a Hilot, we heal people because we are a vessel of overflowing positive energies from the Divine. As this energy overflow, we transfer it to our client that has negative energy and fill it up until the client will spill over all negative energies and be filled with positive energies that a Hilot has.

Another way the Hilot absorb the negative energy of the client is through the use of Banana Leaf during the Pagsasala (Filtering) Ritual.

The work of Hilot

Hilot is not only about giving a sequential massage, but it is about knowing the client/patient well and providing the best possible treatment that a client/patient could ever have.

The treatment of Hilot is not a sensual pleasure but it can be a painful relief and satisfaction.

As a Hilot provider, we do not follow programed sequential movement but we analyze and evaluate first our client/patient to plan an appropriate treatment modality we could aplly in providing relief or cure to our Client/Patient chief complaint and expectations.
